Steering Column Swap
Hello Everyone.
Ive been looking around for parts for my new
89 Firebird Formula WS6.
Theres a couple things that i want to replace, but
Im pulling them from different cars and want to make sure there interchangeable before i purchase them.
First on my list is a steering column out of a 2000 Camaro.
I figured all camaro and firebird parts are the same but doesnt hurt to ask.
Will i need any new connection made to make some things work?
Or should it just hook up to all the same original wiring/controls etc.

Re: Steering Column Swap
i think all the 89 camaros and firebirds have the vats in it which is vehicle anti theft system it was the first year they did it and you have to have a 89 column with a chipped key and the box for it i cant remember the name of the box but it is under the dash on the driver side on the right side of the column. what it is is the key chip has a code to it and the box has the same code if you put the a key in with the wrong code of the box and try to start it it wont start and you can try it again for 5 minutes. if you want to now for sure if you have the vats look at the key to see if it has a chip if you dont have the key i have noticed that all the 89s i have see have a sticker on the door window i am sure all the 89s have it but i can be wrong

Re: Steering Column Swap
VATS won't matter, as long as you have a key cut that fits the new ignition BUT that has the same pellet resistor as the old key.
BUT ... I believe I've read that a 4th gen steering column won't swap. I'm not 100% sure though - there is a thread on 4th gen swap parts, do a search.
The 4th gen uses rack & pinion steering, so complete different setup. But like I said, search.
Wiring should be close, but connectors in the 4th gen cars are usually smaller, so won't be "plug" and play.
