What type of bulbs are in the sockets now?
Also, an option would be is to use a LED strip for more even lighting.

Re: LED footwell lights
sockets should be 194 bulbs, very common size. you can change to a drop in led replacement or do as NINĹ recommended and splice in some led strips instead. just make sure you tuck away the strips for a cleaner look (nobody wants to see your bulbs, just what they can do!)

Re: LED footwell lights
How much wiring do you have under your dash that has you worried about those bulbs melting it? Chef Boyardee been cooking up some spaghetti under there?
They made LED replacement bulbs for every bulb on cars now, actually had a drag car in my shop awhile back for a complete wire job and the guy wanted all LED's, he said it would make the car faster because the alternator would work less. I told him to far out the window, you'll get the same result. True story.

Re: LED footwell lights
Wait wait wait... there are foot well lights? Did they come on all the third gen camaros and firebirds? I was planning on putting in some LED lights but I think I'm going to do this instead because it would have a cool effect and match my car.
