Help with '89 electrical?
First off I am so glad to have found a long-running 3rd gen forum for my woes and worries, lol. First off let me say I am new to the 3rd gen, and not very used to anything water-cooled for that matter, lol. A friend was selling a very clean '89 so I checked it out and gave her a drive. She drives great, has very straight and clean body and motor. What a deal I thought. After I started really fooling around with it this weekend, I found my biggest enemy: electrical problems.
I was told before buying the lights in the gauge cluster were not working. I thought probably a fuse or bulb. Checked all that and it's good. Then I noticed something I have no idea how I missed when I test drove it and looked it over: The park lights do not come on when the light switch is pulled, but the headlights do at the usual position. The park lights come on when the car's ingnition switch is in the "on" position. I have no idea why this was done and not really sure where to start.
I am sure that this has something to do with my gauges, climate control and gear indication lights not working since they come on when the park lights are pulled.
Any thoughts on where to start with this task? Any help is very much appreciated.

If I wasn't getting any park lights I would assume this, and could very well be why it is on the "on" switch now. But why would the parks come on in the "on" position? This isn't a normal thing, is it?

Check the fuse labeled TAIL.
If it’s good check for 12 volts at the PULL FOR ON headlight switch.
Input is terminal F orange wire, output is terminal E brown wire.
If you have 12 volts in but no voltage out when the switch is in the pulled to the out position replace the switch.

do the turn signals and wipers work properly? if not you may have a steering column from another year in the car. 89 is a one year only column.

Well, 1989 is not really a one year only column - it's the only year that has VATS but no airbag on the column, but the basic column itself is identical.

Re: Help with '89 electrical?
yes, the physical demensions are the same, but the electriclal/wiring is completely different. if you just want to drive your car you can install columns from other years. if you want all of your accessorie to work you will have to have a column from an 89
