Relay Wire Removal Help
89 TPI Bird
I need to extract the ECU wire (drk grn/wht) from my fuel pump relay, but it's not moving. I have the flat 5-wire relay. There's nothing hindering it from the back, so what do I have to do to get the wire & female connector to slide out?
Ive searched TGO, asked 2 members, been to the salvage yard to find a test relay to cut open (they had no cars with this relay), and have tried everything I can think of for the past few days. Such a simple task still eludes me.

Re: Relay Wire Removal Help
Not sure it comes out like some other connectors. Can I ask why you need to take it out?

I'm hooking up the EZ-EFI; this wire goes from the FPR to the new ECU. I could just splice & spade but I want to do this right.

Re: Relay Wire Removal Help
Well the green/white wire already runs to the ECM plug - on the other end I think you're going to have to wing it. Spades aren't the only options (unless your equipment requires them) - there are nice round connectors (like boat trailer wires), etc. available, just not always on the shelf at AZ. When I had my fuel relay connector burn up, I saw no way of doing anything but replacing it, had to go to GM to get the connector, but I've since found other sources.
Check the Conduct-tite catalog here:

The Dorman/Conduct-tite part numbers can be ordered at any AutoZone.
And this place has all kinds of nice stuff as well:

Figured It Out
I had to scour 2 salvage yards and finally found 2 examples of this relay harness (from an early 80s Camaro) to dissect in order to get my solution.
The first picture is the flat connector as it would be disconnected from the relay. I had to slide a flat head screw driver under the top cover and pop it loose from the base where the wires are housed (2nd picture). Next, (looking from the front) slide a small electrical screw driver in the notch at the bottom of the female connector; at the same time (from the rear) slide another driver in on the right side to move the blade to the left that secures it from the rear. Now, take a small blunt object (I used needle nose pliers, or a hex wrench) and push the wire and female connector out the back of the harness. Done

Re: Relay Wire Removal Help
Id recommend tossing those crappy relays and updating to a new one like the ovals used in 90-92 cars or sealed squares common on mid-late 90's FWD vans and S10s

Re: Relay Wire Removal Help
That's why I couldn't think of how to disconnect it/disassemble it - it's a flat connector relay. I forgot about those - I was thinking of the oval shaped ones like Pocket mentioned.

The ovals are easy, just a simple release tool and the terminal is out. I toss those flats in the trash and dont care how to take them apart
