speedo quits, vss code, tach runs 2X too fast, temp pegs on '88 IROC convert

my speedo quit (got vss code), tach started running double what it should, temp gage starts normal, then runs "hot" when it isn't really hot. This all happened at the same time, and I suspect a common cause. any ideas on what might cause all these problems to start at the same time?

Gage Rage

A bad ground at the dash is a common cause for multiple gages to go crazy simultaneously, so check the grounds first.

Then make sure the two connectors on the back of the dash are still seated.

Another cause is a broken trace on the circuit board in the dash.

A VSS code can be set by other reasons than a bad or disconnected VSS.

The speedo is mechanically driven, so it shouldn't be affected by electrical gremlins. The manual for my 85 says to disregard code 24 (VSS) if the rear wheels aren't turning.

Re: Gage Rage

I found the body ground near the battery, and the braided one that bolts to firewall. I cleaned and reconnected those, although they were in perfect shape. Any idea where the ground for the dash is?

Grounds 4 Dash-missal

The black ground wires come out of the dash connectors and go to the ‘Convenience Center’ bracket.

The Convenience Center is located behind the knee bolster.

The Convenience Center contains a flasher among other parts
(just to help you identify it).
