power hatch pull down problems

I have just picked up an '89 GTA. It has the power trunk pull down. The plastic housing was all busted up. I purchased a new motor with housing. I put it all together and I cant get it to work. I just need some help testing it. I just dont know where to start. Also is the latch suposed to move in and out? or is it suposed to be tight?
Thanks

It Takes The Strength Of Hercules To Compress A Hatch Gasket

Make sure the LID fuse and ACC fuse are good.

Make sure the ground wire for it is making good ground contact.

Then probe for power at the
dark blue wire at the 4 wire connector that plugs into the unit.

There needs to be power there regardless of the igy key position.

I’m not near any of my ThirdGens
at the moment so I can’t answer that.

Hopefully someone will chime in.

I have had the same issue with my pulldown motor. When you hit the trunk pop switch is there a click or is it just dead? If there is a click just make sure that the leads on the hatch are hitting the leads on the trunk when the hatch is closed

Re: power hatch pull down problems

Thanks. The hatch release button is intermitant. It was working before I changed the motor. I have yet to change out the 3rd brake light. So it is not plugged in. It seems like the latch is in the down position. And I can't figure out how to release it.

Is the latch suposed to be loose or tight in the guides? Mine has a lot of play. Im not sure if im missing something in it.

it should be tight. there are plastic slides that go on the motor track too.

Re: power hatch pull down problems

my motor went bad so i just got in the car and shut the trunk and pulled down on the hydralic arms to make sure it was all the way down and sealed then i made a mark on the metal slide and frame. then i opened my trunk and pushed it back down to my mark and i drilled one hole on each side right in the middle of each track. i used a meatal bit just big enough to use two wood screws and screwed them in. now i can shut my trunk without the motor moving around and its always a perfect seal. ive done this on both my thirdgens now. and the hatch relaese still works fine for me too. its a cheap and good fix if u ask me cause now u never need to worry about that motor again. and on my 87 iroc-z its been this way for over 5 years now and still no problems. u would think that the nylon base would crack or break but it dont even in the winter and i use my trunk alot.
