Starter Selenoid

My starter was working fine last time i went to start my car. I got everything back together today and went to go start it and it was just clicking. I know it usually only clicks when the battery is dead but the battery has full charge and its a high speed click. Can the selenoid go bad from just sitting in cold climate weather? It was in my garage but its a unheated detached garage so it still gets pretty cold in there.

Re: Starter Selenoid

High speed multiple 'clicks' indicate a battery issue - cold kills batteries. 12v doesn't mean anything, amps is what drives a starter. You can be charged to 12v all day and not start a car. Charge the battery, or have it tested.

I agree. Cold kills batteries not starters. I've left starters in the unheated garage for years. You could always try to use jumper cables too and see if it fires up.

Re: Starter Selenoid

I had myquick start jumper hooked up to it pushing 15a. I had it connected to the terminal so even if my battery wasn't pushing any amps it still should have turned over

Re: Starter Selenoid

15 amps isn't enough to start a car. That's why stock auto batteries are rated at 500 CCA (cold cranking amps) or higher. If 15 amps could start a car, they wouldn't have such a huge wire (the positive battery cable) running to the starter - they could use a 16 guage wire. Heck, most of your light bulbs draw 7 amps EACH. 15 amps is just enough to charge a battery, and with a dead battery 15amps would take about 7 hours to charge it fully. You need to charge that battery. If you don't have a charger, autozone/advance/oreilly/whoever will do it for free!

Re: Starter Selenoid

I'm sorry I typed that wrong .. I have a jump start 75a setting I had let it do it's thing for about 20 minutes and nothing.. I have a brand new red top I put in there out of my truck and it did the same exact thing so I'm going with the selenoid as the issue. I never had a selenoid just go bad after sitting for a winter that's why I was wondering if anybody had this issue before on starter selenoids
