Driver side front blinker problems

I have done a lot of reading on here and haven't found my exact problem. My right blinker works great. My left blinker blinks in the rear, but the front parking and side marker don't blink. Could it be the switch if the rear is blinking? I changed the front parking bulb with the 1157a, I believe, and then got a new blinker can/relay. Not sure exactly where to go from here. I would really like to refrain form spinning my wheels by doing unnecessary stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

BULB....Make sure you buy the correct one that has a blinking function. the bulbs are NOT the same even if they fit.

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

I have same problem.

My front left signal and dash light dont flash or lightup. All marker lights work (running lights) back left sequential flash, brake light work and running lights. Front left will not flash. Right side works fine F & B and side markers.

Replaced front socket, and both left bulbs. Replaced dash bulb. The flasher wire coming from inside car (front Left turn flasher) is LT Blue no power.

I've been fighting with this for 2 weeks now.

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

It's sounding more and more like some kind of broken wire between the firewall and the front lights. I guess the problem could start somewhere inder the dash, but I am still hunting. I may not have much time to look until this weekend. Thanks for your response, and keep us posted!

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

Ok, so I got the right bulbs in, replaced the front socket, and still no blink on the left front and left front side marker. Probably going to try looking under the dash further and then maybe looking at the steering column if there are no other suggestions. I really hope that there might be!

LarryL: Have you found a solution yet?

Any more info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

No!!! I have not found the problem yet. I'm checking the wire under the dash. If I find the problem I will let you know. ARRRRRR I hate fixing old wireing. I would rather build a motor.

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

www.sylvania.com states you should be using a 2057 bulb, not 1157 - in the front lights.

The only difference might be wattage, but wattage can make a huge impact.

The older style flashers actually use an overload of amperage (ie wattage) to literally break the circuit when it overheats, and the circuit reconnects again when it cools, over and over every couple seconds, and thus you get turn signal flash. If a bulb is blown or not functioning (ie drawing too many or not enough watts), then there is no overload (since the bad bulb keeps the amps from overloading in the flasher or making it overload too quickly). This is why sometimes you'll have an issue where one side blinks "faster" than the other side.

The newer electronic flashers have an actual small IC chip inside that times the function and turns on/off power to the circuit. Thus a different bulb wattage won't affect the function of the indicator lamps in the dash or the function of the other bulbs on that side.

Also note - our cars use 2 flashers, one for turn signals, and one for 4way emergency flashers - so testing 4ways won't tell you turn signal issues as far as bulbs are concerned. This is again because, it takes a different amperage draw for 4 bulbs at once (4ways) than it does for just the two bulbs (turn signals). This is why it's required for inspectors check turn signals AND 4ways on an inspection.

Also, the side marker lights up front flash with the turn signals, have you checked the bulb/connector for the side marker light?

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

[B]OK FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!! with my car.

As I stated the light blue wire is for left front turn. I traced the wire through the bulkhead connector to a long thin jack hanging by steering column. It connects all the turn wires together i.e. LF,RF, LR, RR to complete the circuts.
LF light blue wire
RF dark blue wire
LR yellow
RR dark green

ON my car the wires were not making good contact in the jack. I move the wire turn signal would work, moved it again it would stop(LF) I cleaned the contacts it did not help.

I cut the wires from connector and connected each with a blade connector.
I matched color to color (see above). Everything works great now, no matter how much I move the wires around.
Hope this helps.

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

Camaronewbie,
Thank you for the information. I will check out the bulbs again. I have checked the side marker bulb. It is working and the socket seems to be in good shape. Thanks again for the information. I appreciate you taking the time to help me!

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

there is a lot of mis information in this thread.
1157's work just fine in the front housing, and 194's on the side. if one side blinks and not the other, it is NOT the flasher unit. I was going to suggest checking the steering column connector thats about 13 wires long on the right side of your column, and it looks like LarryL already solved this issue.
those connectors are notoriously weak and brittle over time, and cause all sorts of lighting issues if they start to fail.

This should answer the bulb questions:

Model / Filament / Volts / Watts / Amps / CP / Life
2057 / Low-High / 14.0-12.8 / 6.86-26.88 /.49-2.10 / 2-32 / 5000-1200
1034 / Low-High /14.0-12.8 / 8.26-23.04 / 0.59-1.80 / 3-32 /5000- 200
1157 / Low-High /14.0-12.8 / 8.26-26.88 / 0.59-2.10 / 3-32 / 5000-1200
2397 / Low-High / 14.0-12.8 / 6.72-28.54 / 0.48-2.23 / 2-40 /5000- 400
2357/ Low-High / 14.0-12.8 / 8.26-28.54 / 0.59-2.23 / 3-40 /5000- 400

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

Its funny cuz in a few auto parts stores, depending on the brand, you will see hybrid packages, it will say 1157/2057

Re: Driver side front blinker problems

I found my problem. It ended up being the turn signal switch. I believe that when I took my steering column apart I pulled a little too hard on the turn signal switch to get to the bolts that tighten up the steering column. Here is a pic of what I found. I noticed that the light blue wire was completely out of the switch, the dark blue was coming out and the brown one fell out while I was removing the cover to see all the wires. please note that if you are looking at this picture trying to figure out your own problem that this view is under the black plastic peice that is under the metal holding bracket.
