weird electrical problem

Hi i got an 88 350 tpi camaro. My battery has been dieng alot when im not driving the car. i parked it in the garage for a week came back it was completly dead. The alternator is fine. I noticed when you sit in the car u can here some thing kind of click in the back. When this happens the dome light dims. if u have the car on the volts will drop some and go back when the clicking happens. Also if it is running it still drops volts. Does any one no what this could be. Im woundering if there is some kind of mod to the fuel pump and it went rong because when i got the car it would runn without the fuelpump relay plugged in it would crank along time then kick on. Sorry for such a long post hope you can help me.

Re: weird electrical problem

If you are hearing a click from the rear of the car, might be a hatch relay or something with the hatch motor making it try to run. Do you have a hatch motor? If so, remove the LID fuse in the fuse box and see what happens. Or remove the rear plastic and disconnect the wires for the hatch.

Your fuel pump question ... the fuel pump will still run without the fuel pump relay. There is a backup circuit in case the ECM and/or fuel pump relay goes bad - it runs a direct path from the battery to the oil pressure sending unit and on to the fuel pump. When you start the car, it takes a few seconds for the OPSU to recognize fuel pressure, that's why the delay. If the fuel pump is not running (you removed the relay), then the pump will get 12v+ from the OPSU and run, but it takes a second or two to start running, and then a few more sewconds to get the fuel up to the injectors for the car to actually fire - thus the delay, and why the car still starts without the fuel pump relay.

The battery is pretty new but is a cheap brand it doesnt die if i drive it every day. I fixed the fuel pump thing along time ago because the car would die if i drove it to long i wasnt sure why the person befor me left it undone. also looks like they messed with the pump because they cut an acces hole I do have a hatch motor but i dont think it sounds like it is that but im not sure it does stay down sometimes when i pop it and i have to like push the little button on it.

Re: weird electrical problem

I only asked about the battery because there are not too many items on the car that draw so much power it will (greatly) dim the dome light. If it isn't a sealed battery, you have to add distilled water to them (the battery cells) on occasion. If the 'water' gets low, the battery will start to get weak, not hold a charge and/or, kill the cells eventually.
My work truck would be on the verge of needing a jump start if the dome light was on for roughly 30mins because the battery was getting so weak (due to age though).

Aside from the rear hatch parts as described by camaronewbie, there is nothing in the rear of the car that would 'click' (as in relays).
