Tachometer troubles

Hey guys, i just bought an iroc/z28,aftermarket stuff nightmare car and i noticed the tach doesn't work, i opened the hood and its a new carbed 305 with after market distributor on it and the green wire that says "tach" above it is cut about 4 inches from the distributor, theres a bunch of wires on the drivers side of the car and one of them is a green color with some kind of weird small wire connector on it, i'm guessing this is what i would need to connect but i dont wanna risk ruining a coil or putting power to power and ruining the distributor so i was wondering is someone could give me some idiot proof advice as i've never really messed with anything like this, i saw a few diagrams but i wasnt exactly sure where some of the wires went/ment/are going... id be so happy to get this tach working and any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!
