going to carb, what wires to remove?

hey,i have been trying to find a definite answer on the forum, but i cant seem to find one.as the title says, i have pulled the stock motor out of my 88 GTA, and i pulled the ecm,and the wiring harness from the fender, but now im stuck with a whole mess of wires that i no longer need. what im wondering,is what wires do i need to keep. i have the connector for the alternator which has a tan/white line, black and red wire(where do they all go?). the starter wires. wiper motor connector plugged in. blower motor plugged in. removed cruise control. im going to put aftermarket gauge cluster in place of digital dash so that wont be needed anymore along with all the rest of the sending unit wires, but i need to keep my heat/ac,blower motor controls. fog lights. headlights tail lights, turn signals, power windows, mirrors, locks hatch release. and im going to run the electric fans to my own relay. so what the hell wires can i remove. theres a couple thick orange wires. and a few that plug into the battery cable directly. any help GREATLY APPRECIATED! thanks in advance

Re: going to carb, what wires to remove?

I am in the same boat right now. I took out the fuel injection wires and left with the big orange ones that go to the battery.

I can't find anything myself. I also have a bunch of sensors on the sides of the engine bay. I'm not sure if they were stock or aftermarket?

Re: going to carb, what wires to remove?

This is asked and answered 100 times a week it seems.

Wires from Pass side wiring harness that run through the fender to the ECM can all go - in the case of a TPI system you should remove them in tact as they can be sold as a complete TPI harness.

Wires from driver side firewall connector are all needed for basic engine/lights operation - all those stay.

A few wires run from pass side to driver side, through the loom that runs over the bellhousing - single them out and remove with the pass side wiring budle in tact so that you can sell a complete TPI harness.

Re: going to carb, what wires to remove?

So today I ripped out all the wiring that came from the ECM. My only question is about the fuel pump. The wires that went to the fuel pump relay were connected in with that wiring harness.

Now that the ECM is gone, how will the fuel pump work, and is there a wiring diagram I can follow for it?

Re: going to carb, what wires to remove?

Well it is kindof answered. The bundle in passenger fender splitts up to a few differnent bunches such as AC? And a couple of others. I have always wondered how I go about dealing with those and figuring out which goes where. My ecm is sitting on floor of car and if I could sell the TPI harness in tact , that would be sweet

Re: going to carb, what wires to remove?

the whole passenger side can be removed as camaronewbie said. as for the fuel pump i just wired it in a relay that is activated by an oil pressure switch so that it will be on only when the engine is running probably the safest on a street car. also some wires go over to the passenger side from the drivers side so just take the loom off and sort through it you can still keep heat and a/c with out computer im only 19 with a short fuse and i figured it out so i no ANYONE can lol

as for diagrams and other things like this a search is always a good thing to do cuz these questions have been answered many times over and over again. not trying to sound like an *** but some people dont like seeing the same question over and over again plus i've learned that a search is normally faster than trying to wait for peoples response.

Hard wire it to a relay. Im doing the same thing with mine and putting it on a switch as to add a extra kill switch

Re: going to carb, what wires to remove?

No. Ones I am talking about, one is a grey plug with two fat pink wires and a orange and white. The other is a clear plug with about fourteen wires. One fat brown wire , 2 purples, couple of bright oranges and a few others. Now this is on enginge bay side of plug under dash by ecm.. the other side going through dash is different colored. So coming into car it is one fat bunch that splits into two. Three plugs for ecm on one bunch , and the two I described in other bunch

Come on. With the thousands of ecms ripped out, somebody has to know what those plugs are for.

If you could post pics, that would be cool. All my internet is done on phone and I can't post pics.

Re: going to carb, what wires to remove?

Yes. And there is also a smaller white one. The black ends like the ones you posted are inside car under dash and their counterparts that I have taken outside now are clear. So does anybody know what they are for???

Re: going to carb, what wires to remove?

Is this a manual GTA or auto with a 700-R4 and will you be reusing the transmission?

If it is a 700-R4 you will lose your lockup to the converter by removing the ECU. Would need a lockup kit to fix this.

If I was converting to carb, I would get an engine bulkhead harness from an 83-85 carb'd camaro or firebird as this would have the correct hookups for things like HEI. You can't reuse that intank pump as it puts out way to much psi for a carb.
