Have one, it works - haven't gotten any tickets for a while and I use it because my speedometer doesn't work. A budget model off of newegg.com.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

I had my buddies for a while and I would usually spot the cop before the stupid POS would go off. Don't waste money on one... spend the money to make your car faster so you can just out run them. Just playing... but seriously, they are for the most part a waste of money.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

the problem with radar detectors is the radar signal isnt there until the cop has you in the gun sights and pulls the trigger. at that point youre already screwed. and a lot of departments use a laser type gun now, no radar signal at all.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

Yeah if you live in a high populated, wealthy area, then it's not worth it to get one. My friend in his Saab has the Escort 9500 IX and he has yet to get a ticket. Not because he watches, but because it picks up well before you have to worry.
I've got a cobra one and it works well against anything other than laser. Then again the area I live in, the cops leave their finger on the trigger and I catch it well before I can see it.
Mine was about 100$ so it's your call. I like it, but that's just me.

You can get laser detectors too but nothing will save from instant-on and no-one else is in sight. You're always relying on getting a signal from someone getting lit up ahead of you.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

There's a write up on her about the different types of radars. Where I live cops don't use lasers so it works GREAT! Always get them way before I see them. Although it goes crazy in town cause of banks and stuff, city mode doesn't seem to work. However if your coppers have laser readers don't waste your money.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

Escort has a new product called Live Alert. Basically you hook your phone to your detector and their app connects you to a live database of active radar/lasers. Pretty cool concept but of course it depends on the people around you having Live Alert as well. For a more manual method, install Trapster on your phone. I use it all the time...especially when I head into DFW.

I had an app, I think it was trapster. Is that the one where people have to report police locations? Nobody ever did lol so I uninstalled it

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

I'd spend the $ on fixing the speedometer before I spent it on a radar detector. The fix is probably cheaper anyways.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

theres a few apps that basically do the same thing. people report were the cops have the speed traps set up. usually people dont report crap so the app is less than useful.

only sure fire way to not get a speeding ticket is to not speed.....

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

If your not getting a passport 8500, valentine 1,($350-$500) or better dont waste your money. Used correctly they are VERY effective, there have to be other cars ahead getting hit with radar for you to pickup the signal splatter (this works for pop/instant on too), with laser your pretty much screwed. You cant just turn them on and haul ***, you have to use your head.

I have a passport 8500 and my buddy has a V1, we ran them side by side for 3000 miles and they both performed well, neither offering a real advantage over the other except the V1 has arrows that tell you which direction the radar signal is coming from

I have never gotten a ticket with one, but i feel like I will get one as laser is becoming more common

Only takes one time of getting pulled over for doing 70 in a 30 to fix the need for speed for life.

The only LEGAL radar avoidance out there are radar reciever's and carbon fiber. Neither will defeat a laser or the bear in the air.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

When I was in the US ARMY back in 2000-2004, we would have what is called "Seargents Time". We as in the HHD had a class about safe driving. One topic was speeding. To make a long story short, the MP showed us the first radar detector and radar gun. They where both made by the same company in its prime. The radar detector sounds off when it senses the radar from the gun. At the same time, the radar gun is seeing you. So it merely a matter of luck if the cop sees you in a group traveling at a high rate of speed. But the cops do have one advantage of a speeding group. The gun is equipt with a switch which will single out a car that is traveling faster than the others. It's just a matter of trying to figure out which is traveling fast than the other from a distance. So it's really a guessing game and an assumption to people. One thing is for sure though. A cop will not tell you this or get too much into detail how and what the capabilities of a radar gun has over a radar detector.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

Do you guys have the fixed speed cameras over there? I believe they are radar based, but since you know where they are it kind negates the need for a detector. And they certainly make you not speed!

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

I'm still using the 1984 escort detector i installed in my
car(above the mirror)in 1990 shortly after getting my
z28-despite the design being over 30yrs old,it's still
very effective and has saved me from a ticket numerus
times over the last 21+years Did get a ticket this year-
forgot to turn the escort on...
Around 1994,got a combined radar/laser detector
because it was smaller and i had heard cops were using
laser locally(that notion was false i found out later...)
The new detector was not as good or as cool as the old
escort so the escort went back in to stay

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

I did not know that about the radar guns vs detectors. I mean it makes sense that when the signal is picked up by the detector, you would be caught by the gun. Though it's still a great feature to have because god forbid you don't pay attention to that cop up ahead and the little fella is telling you to slow your butt down!

Really has saved me a handful of times on long trips though!

Yeah man. Both where made by the same company. Also it depends on the cop. If it ain't a big deal, the cop will let it slide.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

I have been around since the old cobra needle detectors of the 80s and seen the technology change to modern day models used today. Ive also been certified using laser and radar speed detection devises, including same lane and taget acquistion units. Ive been in law enforcement since the early 90s.
I cannot count how many times Ive spoke to a speed violator and saw the power cord to thier detector swinging off the visor. There was about the same amount of people coming to court arguing thier innocense because thier detector didnt alert them.
Do not assume how law enforcment operates and enforces unless you are sitting next to them and observing, along with having an understanding of the equipment and laws. Every state has diffrences, as well as each agency or juristiction.
Drive safe out there and be careful. If your going to rely on a detector, then learn how to use it appropriately.

V1 user here and it's a great tool if you know how to use it. It's mounted above the rear view mirror.

I installed the concealed display in the defroster switch area, since those didn't work anything for me. That location makes it easy to view and mute false signals.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

i have a cobra and on the highway i am able to detect cops about 5 miles out. every time
In the city there are alot of false alarms but if it an area that you drive in daily, you learn where the false alarms are coming from and you are ablr to identify a cop very easily

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

as for it going that if the detector caught the radar then the radar caught you. not always the cop could be gunning a different car. In 6 years of using a cheap one i have zero speeding tickets. between my bmw m3 and my thirdgen camaro. i have a hard time driving slow anywhere. put one in, install it correctly and see for yourself.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

There is no way to stop a laser or radar........ Let me rephrase my statement. There is no way to stop or make microwaves, disapate or reflect microwaves to the radar gun. All these devices that sense "microwaves", not "radar" is bs. They do help depending on a range of circumstances but it is not 100% garenteed that the detector will sense the microwaves before the guns microwaves arrive. Once the device absorbes or senses a microwave, guess what? The radar gun has already received an accelerated return microwave. All these devices are just gimmicks. It's like a spoiler kit on a rice burner. Just because you add a body kit, it doesn't make it faster. If you buy a top of the line radar gun jammer, it doesn't mean that you are invincible.

No one mentioned anything about ‘stopping radar’. We are talking about radar detectors. Also, laser guns can be jammed, however laser jammers are illegal in a few states. Please stop spreading misinformation.

Re: Radar/police detectors who has em?

i picked up a model from my friend for 50 bucks and run it everyday, its accurate and i always pick up cops like a mile away. mine hardly ever goes of for random reasons and it has picked up every cop i have ever seen other than undercover police or staters because of their spectres. They are legal in every state other than the dstrict of columbia and florida to passenger vehicles under 30,000 pounds since january 1st 1993.

If you pay attention to the threads that I'm repling to, then you will see why I'm posting. Attention to detail is key. Im not misleading anything. There is a big misconception and I'm just posting to help the community understand. So now since I've acknowledged what I learned in the US ARMY, I would just say to consider my info. No intentions to make anyone upset. My appogies guys. I do find this thread rather interesting though.
