i have a 91 camaro 3.1 auto trans just yesterday i go to fire her up and i noticed that while the key is in the "run" position only my stereo comes on. my security light for vats none of that on my cluster comes on. but i go to turn her over the lights come on on the das and the audiblle under the dash comes on just a hair before the starter engages and she'll crank and start but as soon as i let go of the key and it returns to the "run" position it dies along with all my cluster lights. I also noticed the smell of burnt electrical and pulled off my kick pannel to see if i could find anything wrong.... to my avail nothing visible. Also my temp gauge reads at waaay above 260. im thinking maybe there is a factory kill switch wired into this causing my problems...??? i just recently replaced the cluster too... any help would be greatly appreciated

there are some fusable links at the starter.id check them.

will that cause it to not stay running... it will still start and i can tinker with the ignition and keep it runing but if i move the key back to the run position it dies and none of the cluster lights come on pretty much after i start the car i pull back on the key just enough to disengaage the starter and it will stay running... ill check the links to starter once i get some time during the day thank you

Sounds like the ignition switch has slipped down the column a hair. The spring return to the run position of the key, is making the rod retract the ignition switch from crank, past run, to the acc position instead.

Loosen the mount screws and move the switch up the column a little. From memory it's a bit of a juggle keeping the ig switch and dimmer switch (shares the same mount screws) aligned corrected with their respective actuating rods.

adjusting the ignition switch may be all thats needed, but with the burning smell, i would drop the column down and replace the switch.

starting on page 15 thru page 17 shows where and how to replace the ignition switch.
page 64 tells how to adjust the ignition and dimmer switch.

ok ill try adjusting the ignition switch... thank you guys. the rod for the dimmer is dissconected and i have my brights ran to a toggle (which if any of you guys know electrical i would like a little advise) so I dont think that will be an issue?.. im afraid the burnt electrical smell is the cluster seeing as how my temp gauge isnt responding and ive noticed my tach is way off but ill be replacing the tach soon. i will do all what you guys have said and keep you posted thank you again.

Hello i'm new to third gen. I have a 92 Camaro and i get nothing at the starter no click no nothing. I've replaced the neutral safety switch, the ignition pack that is on the column still nothing. i read in a older post that i can jump the purple wire on the starter directly to the battery to by-pass the ignition switch. is that correct? if so how can i just put a push button in the car to start it that way?

can i just run a wire from the battery and one from the purple wire on the starter to a push button inside the car so i can start it
