My camaros MPH odometer gauge has a speedo cable's leading to the rear end of the transmission. There is only a cable connected to the transmission. To hook up the two prong wire pigtail for the v.s.s. what do I need?
I have found a couple of v.s.s. sensors with only the pigtail connection and no speedo cable

It can be located as a unit at the tailshaft of the transmission, or behind the speedometer on cars with a cable driven speedometer.
if you have not got the VSS output at speedo and require it for your computer then you install this
http://tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/10956/7586
between trans and speedo cable to supply the correct signal

To add to what vetteoz mentions, the VSS would be located on the rear of the instrument cluster on Camaros, 82-89. What's the issue you're attempting to correct?Originally Posted by SanAntonio3

I thought the yellow box behind the instruments gauge cluster was the vehicle speed sensor buffer.? I am trying to correct my lying speedometer... and I believe its because I don't have the correct sensor at the transmission, seeing as the two wire connector is just hanging out next to the transmission( I think the colors of wire are yellow, and purple.) I have heard that not having the v.s.s. effects the cars performance alot. What exactly does it effect/control? And where's the best place to purchase it?

Any mods could have been done to it over the years
at trans you could have cable drive for speedo or a VSS unit ; not both

and to avoid stalling on deceleration.
without VSS the ecm will not control the torque converter lockup,
the ecm will not retard timing if you run into detonation, and it is possible to run into
stalling /idle speed issues on deleration.
In addition, the ecm will not adjust the fuel table properly as you drive ("learning ability").
If the ecm does not know the vehicle speed it is assumed to be 0 mph.

I did read the post and i am thinking about purchasing that sensor. But just to clarify, no camaro came with both types of sensors hooked up at trans.(speedo cable and pigtail connector?) What is more likely to have been on my 1989 305 TBI? Or how would I find out? Maybe the gauge cluster was changed? I dont know... Also my Rpm gauge doesnt work. Could this have something to do with it?

82-89 Camaros rear of cluster, 90+ on the tail shaft. One or the other. The pig tail on your car is for the backup lights.Originally Posted by SanAntonio3

Any cluster that would fit your car would have the VSS on the rear of the cluster.
No.

ok. I got it. thanks for all the help. Back up lights huh? Strange.
