Convenience center

The metal frame that holds the convenience center in my 84 is held in with two sheet metal screws that attach to the front of the dash. There is no support at the back of the metal frame. It seems to me that this assembly is too heavy to be secured by only two screws and only in the front. I know that a previous owner has had the dash out so I am wondering if a support bracket is missing. Any ideas?

Re: Convenience center

There should be two "lever" like arms on either side of the convenience center.

You squeeze these arms towards the center of the convenience center and pull it down. It's hinged on either the front or rear edge (I forget which).

Re: Convenience center

Hi Paulo:

Thanks but I'm asking what secures the metal housing that the "pull down" plastic part fits into. My car is anything but stock and at idle I had a vibration in the dash right in front of the driver. This unit isn't well secured and I think that it may be rattling around under there. I can fabricate something but if there is a stock bracket missing then I'd rather go that route. So that I'm clear, the metal housing is secured at the front with sheet metal screws...there is nothing securing the back. Can I ask what you have in your car?

Ian

Re: Convenience center

My bad. It's the fuse block that swings down. It's been a while since I've been under the dash.

To correctly answer your question, there is a brace for the Convenience Center according to the '86MY assembly manual. Of course, it may have been deleted in actual production.

See attached.

Re: Convenience center

Not a download. It's a pdf from a hard copy page.
