Car died need to fix it by this weekend. help
i have an l98 v8 with a carb and hei distributer
i was driving at 45 and the engine just died and im assuming its a spark issue.
i took the #1 plug out and tried to get a spark by placing a wire in it and placing it close to metal ground but i got no spark.
I have two wires coming into my distributer a pink one and a brown one. I verified that the pink one has 12 volts in the key ignition position and i think the brown one goes to my alternator. The ground also looks good.
I took the distributer cap off. The rotor spins.
Help i have work on monday

Cap and rotor look good? How old is the distributor? The coil and all that check out? Do you have a spare distributor that you can swap some parts from?

its my only distributer and its fairly new.
Earlier in the week i had been cleaning up some old wires in the engine bay. But i drove around the block fine and then after a few miles it just cut out

The problem might be the spark module.
The fastest way is to find out is to swap it.
However if you want, you can unplug the 4 pin connector from the distributor.
Then remove the distributor cap.
Then unplug the pickup coil from the module.
Now connect a voltmeter to the tach terminal.
Turn the key to RUN.
Using a 5 volt power supply with a small bulb in series, touch 5 volts to the innermost pin (it’s labeled P on some brands) of the module.
Now, does the voltmeter sharply decrease when you touch the 5 volts to the module?
If there is no response from the module it’s bad or not grounded.
