Turning but no fire

Hey there I have an 84 camaro 2.8, earlier today it died and I thought at first it was out of gas since it was low but now its not firing but it will turn over normally I put in a new ignition coil thinking it would help but still no spark. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Turn But No Burn

Grab a test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester).

Connect one lead to the coil primary
(the ignition module side not the key side) and the other lead to ground.

Crank the engine.

Does the test light flash while cranking?

Be aware of the difference of FLASHING verses merely PULSATING which can be observed when you have the test light connected to the key side.

Happy Racing!

Did you get the ignition module checked out? Most parts stores can check them. Most of the times I have had an issue except for a bad pick up coil once it is usually the ignition module. Either fried or corrosion causing a bad ground.

Re: Turn But No Burn

Nina, thanks for the advice. My '92 firebird would not start last night. Had a friend come over after work tonight to help me try to fix it. We checked fuel pump and fuel to injectors. Then we checked the fuses. Last, we checked for spark to the plugs and found none.

Friend thought it might be the coil and started searching my Chilton's manual to find out how to check the coil. While he did that, I checked this forum and found your suggestion to RolandTD. We had to pry out the rotor. Then we pulled out the ignition module. Found some rust indicating moisture has been getting into the distributor.

We followed your suggestion and took the module to Advance Auto where they checked and found it was bad. Bought new ignition module and rotor and installed. We also put a thin line of silicone sealer around bottom of distributor cap to seal out moisture.

Bird fired right up. Friend left for home because wife was calling and nagging him. Young, good looking, neighbor girl heard the car rumbling and asked me for a ride.

Nina, I just wanted to give you a tip of the hat for excellent repair advice which not only got my bird running, but also resulted in my cruising around with a beautiful woman. She's out of my league, but what the heck - neighborhood wives now think I am a dirty old man and their husbands think I am their hero. I love my Firebird.
