Third brake light switch questions
Just went and got another chmsl assembly from the local yard, hot wiring it works but pressing the brake, it doesn't. I went and pulled a brake light switch from the camaro at the yard, but didn't see a second one for the hmsl, are the the same switch? What is the difference if they're are different and any pics would help, thanks.... Just trying to fix my third brake light. Idk if the switches are the same, different, or whatever so any help is great... Thanks

Re: Third brake light switch questions
All of the brake lights are off of the same switch, I believe it's a yellow wire from the switch to the light.

Re: Third brake light switch questions
I have the same prob. My brake lights work but the third hatch one doesn't. I took it of and hooked it up to the battery it light up. Don't know if it is getting power to the light or if it needs a better ground. But I know the bulbs work for sure. Cheers...

Yeah, same here.... Maybe changing the switch will help... We will see. Once it finally decides to stop raining I'll change out the switch. All my brakes work except that one.

Where is the switch located? Going to check to see if power is getting to the light. If you get it figured out please let me know.Thanks..

Re: Third brake light switch questions
The switch is located on the bracket connected to the brake pedel. It has two wire harnesses connected to it. It is white-ish, about 2-1/2-3" long has a threaded shaft. The brake pedel pushes on the switch when YOU ARE NOT PRESSING the brake, when you press the pedel it releases the button and the brake lights come on. I knew all that, just didn't know it controlled both regular and hms lights.

Re: Third brake light switch questions
Are you testing if it works with the hatch open? The HMSL won't get power unless the hatch is closed. For 86-90 models it is powered by the contact pad just to the left of the hatch pull-down unit. There are spring-loaded tabs that make contact with the pad when the hatch is closed. Check that you have power to the two outer contacts when the brake pedal is pressed. Clean the contact pads with solvent and scotch-brite or steel wool. I think the 91-92 are hard-wired.
