Volts gauge zeros out..on and off

Hello. I am having a weird issue with my 84 camaro. When the car is running the volts gauge will erratically drop off, and then come back up to like 12 volts, then drop off again. Was coming home the other day in the rain and had the fan on to help clear the windows, I could hear the fan slow down to nothing then come back on and then shut off and come back on....while it was doing this I noticed the volts gauge bouncing all over the place. Any idea what could be the problem

It is time to have your charging system tested. Something is not working right or you have a short somewhere. Check your wires going down to your starter from your battery, look for any burnt insulation or something that doesn't look right.
