installing vats in 87 iroc(having trouble)

Heya,

Im trying to install a vats module into my 87 so I can use an 88gta 350 prom.
My 87 has a 70's reproduction Gm 350 crate motor in it.(came with a 305)
The guy I bought it from left the 305 injection stuff in place. I plan to switch to 350 injectors so new prom will be needed.
I happened to have this prom laying around from a past project that didnt pan out. And seeing as how an 87 350 prom is a Bitch to find in a junkyard Im going this route, since I have no money to order a 350 prom(or have mine reflashed) at this time.
for my purposes here can we go on the assumption that the current parts I have are what I must use at this time and that no other parts can be aquired in the forseable future.
It seemed simple enough.

I added a pin to B6 in my ecu harness and connected that to dark blue on the vats.
Orange on vats to constant 12v
pink/black on vats to 12v in run.
black/white on vats to ground.
wired the resistors between purple/black and white/black on vats.(measured the key to be 7.44k ohms so should be blank 13)Initially a locksmith told me it was blank 12 but when I took my multimeter to it came to 7.44. Initially I tried 7.54k ohms and no good, so reduced it to 7.41 and still a no go on the injectors.
The ecu is throwing a code 46, indicating something to do with a general vats failure. I am not getting a code 53 so Im going on the assumption that the ecu IS getting a signal from vats to Not turn on the injectors.
While cranking with my multimeter checking voltage between B6 on the ecu and ground I get 5v so that seems good.

I guess ultimately Im wondering if by connecting the resistors between purple/black and white black(assuming its the right resistance) that should in theory make the Vats think its the right key?

Code 46 isn't a VATS failure. It's working by NOT sending a signal to the ECM by GROUNDING the 5V coming out of the ECM at a rate of 30Hz. Which is why the ECM is disabling the fuel injection.

Try the lower resistance first. If that's a no-go, well, you need to start at #1 and work your way up. You need to turn the ignition off for about a minute between tries to let the timer in the VATS reset.

And code 53 is only set while the trouble exists... It doesn't stay in the memory like, say, code 33.

This might be simpler.
http://www.bakerelectronix.com/products_vats/

No key or VATS module needed
Supplies the fuel enable signal direct to the ECM

All assumes that the VATS module is known as working correctly?
Do you know that?

always thought VATS started in 89 for the fbodys? i figured 88 would be fine.....unless the birds got it a year before the camaros. like the corvette who got it in 86

Why not get a copy of said PROM (Apyp apyu???), edit out the VATS, burn and install w/ memcal adapter.. a whole lot easier tha installing vats.

My '88 GTA has VATS and I'm getting my prom reprogramed as I write this post.

Re: installing vats in 87 iroc(having trouble)

I would if I had any money at the moment, as no one locally can reprogram my prom this is the route I want to go since it doesnt require buying additional parts., I guess like maverick said Ill just start with resistance value 1 and work from there.

Thanks guys.
