Dash lights out. no pwer anymore to them.

so the other day i was fixing my horns and when i finished i drove my car around and it was fine. coming home from work one early morning and i lost all the lights in my dash, ac controls, and shifter light. checked it in the morning and swapped the fuse. problem solved...... next night i turned my lights on and they worked. i shifted from park to reverse then lost my shifter light. then when i shifted from reverse to drive. i lost all of them. swapped the fuse then they worked. it ended up happening again and i put a bigger amp fuse(7.5) and it lasted two nights till it popped.
funny thing was i swapped all my dash bulbs and mini bulbs to leds for better light and lower power consumption.
now when i put a new fuse i dont get any light from either bulbs nor do i get power going to them from the fuse block. what should i check or no next? i do alot of night time driving and its important i have functional lights since i can never tell how fast im going and police here are strict on speed limit when they catch you haha. even in the night with no one around its hard to get away going 15 over.
any thing anyone can think of?
im thinking of getting some of those led strips and re wiring my whole dash lighting system. well at least the gauges ones since my other lights work fine. im not sure if theyre on the same fuse or not.

Chances are you've got a loose wire after the junction block, before the lights. Since it's only blowing while the lights are on, I'd guess past the switch. Check for damaged insulation and loose terminals everywhere between the switch and the bulbs.

Fuse Ruse

Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe each side of the INST LPS fuse socket with the fuse removed, and the dimmer in the MAX position, and the marker lamps on.

Is there power on one side of the socket?

Re: Fuse Ruse

Just got around to finally tearing up my dash and trying to find the problem.
i tried getting the voltage from both side by putting the black pin on the chassis and the red pin on the green and grey in the inst lps and i didnt get any reading with the parking lights on...
could my switch be bad? ill be going to the junkyard tomorrow since im in need of more 5amp fuses and could use another switch just incase...

Yes.

If the headlights work, but you have no power on both sides of a good INST LPS fuse, the headlight switch is bad, or the wiring to it.

Re: Fuse Ruse

Um, it's a Bird. There is a remote dimmer assembly between the headlight switch assembly and the fuse, mounted to the passenger's side of the dash support by the steering column with 2 screws. That would be the next stop before the fuse and after the switch. Check for power at the green wire with the white stripe here to rule out the headlight switch dimmer being bad.

If this dimmer is bad, I have one I can't use anymore...
