alternator valve covers clearance problem

is it possible to take the alternator apart and rotate it so it would mount up different and move my power stud away from my valve cover.

Yes, I believe that is doable. It's called clocking your alternator.

I dinged mine with a hammer... And I still blew the chrome off that valvecover a few times while removing it, etc. stud was never covered with rubber or anything.

Why did he take it apart? He should have just pulled the bolts and rotated it...

Re: alternator valve covers clearance problem

i recently had this problem. i had an old piece of hose runnning between the valve cover and alternator that may have been a contributor to the damage. it burned a hole in the valve cover, and burned up part of the plastic gasket behind the stud.

since repairing the damage i have not had another problem. im planning on changing out the serp drive for a v belt. im only running the alternator, water pump and p/s.

I didn't think it would turn without pulling it out some, but I haven't done it myself so....

Re: alternator valve covers clearance problem

I think some alts. are different. I was able to remove the bolts and turn the top, after I removed the pulley. I will post pics after I paint it.

Just went out to the shop and tried it on an alt typical of an 88+ TPI with serp brackets. Removed the bolts, and I rotated the front (which the brackets bolt to), which effectivly changed the position of the rear in relation to the front.

Well that's sure a whole lot easier than trying to put the fiddly pieces back in. To be clear, there is only two pieces to the case right, front and back halves?

The back half won't rotate, the front will. On OUR applications, the alternator bolts to the front half. Although the rear does have a threaded hole for the steel arm that goes to the top of the intake (or exhaust on some years), but most people throw that in the garbage.

Unbolt, spin the front, rebolt.

Re: alternator valve covers clearance problem

Also - disconnect your battery before doing any work that's likely to jam grounded metal things into your alt stud . A rubber cap might be a good idea too.

True but on mine 89' I had to remove the pulley first. I tried to just twist it but where the bolt holes are they extend down and hit each other. you can twist the top with the pulley on both ways but you need to lift the top about a 1/4 of an in to be able to change positions.

Are you saying the part the bracket bolt goes through were hitting where the two halfs bolt together?

Re: alternator valve covers clearance problem

yes, but it was easy to remove the pulley. I wrapped a strap around the pulley and used a socket and wrench. It was actually dealt easy. I will take some pic and post when I get home.
