Does this look like odometer rollback?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking at a 92 Z28 to buy and I'm concerned with the odometer on the cluster pic they sent me. Does the high riding 5 in the 50k slot and the partially visible 1 in the 100k slot look concerning to anyone else? Even for a GM I never saw one this far off!

Thanks

You need a better look, like the pads on the peddles heavily worn, or does it have the original motor. Things like that could give it away as a high miler.

Re: Does this look like odometer rollback?

Thanks Edwardgp!
I've seen about a dozen pics of the car and interior. Everything looks pretty mint. It's supposed to be all original except tires, battery, and radio. I'm hoping to look at it this weekend and buy it if it all looks legit. I'm also told I can look at some service/inspection records since 98. Great point on the pedals too, I will definitely take a close look at them!

Thanks!

I would be extra cautious. I would also look at the seats and any buttons surrounding the driver. Ask how many owners and then ask why there is so little mileage if the current owner is long term. I have a 86 with 131k original miles and I get questioned all the time.

Check the pedals....if they look worn, then you can be sure it doesn't have 55k on it. That's usually a dead giveaway.

its one way, but be aware new pedal covers can be bought really cheap from Help! at pep boys or autozone.

It's 20 years old, mileage means nothing anymore. It's either in good shape for its age, or not.

Re: Does this look like odometer rollback?

I pulled a car fax and the miles were 47.5k in 2001 and reached the present 55.5k since. The owner said it was a daily driver but its been in the garage and hardly driven since 2001. The owner had 52k on ebay even though it was really 55.5k (he said he honestly just didn't even look at the odom and thought that it was 52). He got very irritated (bad sign!) that I was questioning the mileage and thought I was crazy for seeing a portion of the 1 in the 100k slot on the odometer which he denied was there (his wife sent the cluster pic and I sent it back to him, receiving no comment in return!). He claims he has some state inspection records with the miles recorded but he's extremely difficult to deal with and he won't send any of them - I have to see them in person. Probably not going to take the 6hr drive to see it. I've been looking a long time for a mint all orig 92 Z28 black on gray with a 5.7, I guess the search goes on!

Re: Does this look like odometer rollback?

My thoughts exactly. I told him I would be happy to pay the 7500 as agreed (1400 more than the highest bidder when it was on ebay) if everything was legit like he claimed. As bad as I wanted that exact car, I'm getting tired of dealing with this guy. I've owned 3 3rd gen's in the past but always regretted selling my 92! I still know who has it but its on its 3rd engine now (a decent 383), no exhaust open headers, over 100k miles on the car, and it sits outside in the northeast, no cover, exposed to all weather, not very well kept. It'll cost me plenty to get it nice again. I'm just glad everyone thinks that 1 on the odom looks weird. I've never seen that in all the 3rd gens I've seen in my lifetime!

Re: Does this look like odometer rollback?

that is normal looking to me I have a 91 with 63,000 on it and it has the same looking issue. my 92 also had the same issue, you must remember these cars where not built with much precision, all you need to do is go see the car in person, a high mileage car will only clean up so well! and besides if it looks great, drives great, and all the records add up then wtf is the problem? There was a 92 z28 with 44,000 miles on it for sale on this site not to long ago for 7,000 and the speedo apeared the same way!
