Which msd distributor to buy?

I have a 355 sbc in my 1984 camaro. I installed a Msd 6al and now want to add a msd distributor to match. Which msd distributor will be my best bet? Not looking to break the bank I just need something that will work well with my 355 and msd 6al. Also was wondering do I need an ignition coil like a Msd blaster 2? Thanks for any help

Hmm, nobody has an opinion? Okay how about this... What distributor are you running in your car?

I have found that the stock distributor does a great job, for a distributor.

Re: Which msd distributor to buy?

Thanks for your help, but I am looking for an opinion on a aftermarket distributor. I was running a HEI set up and the ignition module went kaput. So I decided to hook up my msd 6al which works out well because to do so I would need to remove the module anyways. Well long story short it has not ran right since and I have double and triple checked the wiring and for some reason I can't figure it out. I am thinking it has something to do with my set up and thought that a sure fire way to fix it would be to get an msd distributor that would be direct plug and play with my 6al. Please advise if you have any advice.

How do you figure that?
The 6A is just a external add on CDI to any dist , you don't touch anything inside

If you were running a bad ICM before you are still running a bad ICM.
Throwing on the MSD has changed NOTHING; the MSD gives a better spark , it still relies on the original dizzy ( working correctly ) to activate the spark

Re: Which msd distributor to buy?

Vetteoz,

My distributor is not a 5 or 7 pin module type. My Hei distributor has a 4 pin module and if you look further down in msd's instruction I do in fact have to remove the ignition module and install the MSD PN 8861 wire harness. Any other idea of why this is not working? Here is Msd's instructions for the 6al. Goto page 16 and you will find my type of installation.

Thanks.

Re: Which msd distributor to buy?

Depends on how you wired it. I am running a summit digital ignition box with the stock style HEI and it works great, never had a problem with it. The biggest difference I see in the 5/7 pin insturctions is the cap still has wires connected to the base of the dist. If you wired it up with those instructions, check all of your connections, and ensure that you did not mess with the magnetic pick up in the base of the dist, if you canged the position it may not read the signal properly. Looks like it may be time to break out the multimeter and do some continuity checks.

Re: Which msd distributor to buy?

I wired it exactly as shown in the directions for the 4 pin module. Here is the exact HEI distributor I have in the car.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-BBC-CHEVY-CLEAR-CAP-65K-HEI-DISTRIBUTOR-6500-CL-/330809399706?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d05c6d99a&vxp=mtr
Got it from Skip White on Ebay a few years back. Paid 80$ back then....now worth half that. Anyhoo I realize it's prolly a piece of junk and thus this is why I want to know what MSD distributor would be a good match, also to be sure there are no clearance issues with the lip of the cowl.
