Yet another Tachometer Question

I have read the posts but there is clear answer in any of them.

1) There is a Tach Filter mounted on the Firewall, driver side of the distributor. From what I read some cars have them and some don't. Mine doesn't have one.

2) The Tach in my car reads about 1100 rpm at idle. I know that this is not right. Rev the car and it will move eventually. reving up and down suddenly does nothing. It is like it can't follow sudden movements. Car is an 82 Firebird with a V6 engine by the way.

3)A lot of posts about people fitting an MSD box and having problems afterwards. What is an MSD box??

4) On the 82 -89 cars some people say that the capacitor on the electronic board at the back of the tach gauge on the dash is the problem. Other people say that its the resistors.

Having read the posts I am still no wiser! Does anyone know is it possible to fix the original Tachometers or not. Is it worth fitting a tach filter, even though a lot of people with this problem have tach filters on their cars.

Can anyone give some sound advise.

Thanks.

Re: Yet another Tachometer Question

I'm also curious as to what the fix is. I have an 83 camaro running an accel hei distributor with the supercoil and the tach is acting crazy. I just cranked it up without the tach wire even connected and I watched the tach needle gradually peg itself out without any engine rev. When the wire is connected it also shows about 7000 rpm. I've read these are problematic and is probably the capacitor. Is it easier to buy an aftermarket gauge and just mount it? I would like to have the original working though.
