steering column electronics 89 -> 91
hello all !
because of a broken steering ignition lock i m in the progress
replacing of the steering column of my Trans Am GTA '89.
i already have the steering column completely removed and
disconnected from the car and instead replacing the
steering ignition lock i want to put a complete steering
column thats in a better condition with a working steering ignition lock.
i do have 1 spare steering column but its from a Trans Am '91 (with airbag)
i have been comparing the steering columns, they do almost look
the same except the wirings looks a little different.....
so my question to you all is....do i need to modify a lot
to make this "new" steering column properly connected to the car ?
please check the pictures !
connector 1 GTA ('89)
white | dark green | light yellow | purple | black | blue | light blue | black | greenbrownblack | brown | yellow | grey | black | orange

connector 1 - Trans Am ('91)
white | dark green | light yellow | purple | black | blue | light blue | black | greenbrownblack | brown | xxxx | xxxx | xxxx | xxxx

connector 2 GTA ('89) (check white connector in the picture)
white | grey | black | purple | pink | xxxx | xxxx | xxxx | xxxx

connector 2 Trans Am ('91) (that black one, on the left...)
white | grey | green | purple | pink | black | blue | grey | pink

I have 3 questions for you all..
1. on the connector #1 GTA : please check the last 4 cables
( | yellow | grey | black | orange )
where are they for ?
2. also for connector #2 Trans Am : please check the difference ?
what to do with this one ? it has more cables that the GTA's connector...
3. on the orginal steering column.. i also noticed a yellow cable and
a thick black cable with a flat connector at the end. see pic below
Where are they for ? the "new" steering column doesnt have these cables...
I know i have a lot of questions...all what i want is to put the newer steering
column back with the GTA steering wheel installed with minor modifications.
it's important to have the electronics fully functional like the turn signals,
hazard signals, cruise control, the lights on the GTA steering wheel and so on...
but i dont need the airbag, and the GTA steering wheel radio buttons are
also not important for me because i have aftermarket radio installed.
FYI : the VATS key is disabled on this car.

Looking forward to hearing from you !

I put an 82 colum in my 88. I gutted all the wiring and rewired it with the 88 connectors. Its an option.

This should help out some. Out of an 88 Service manual, should be the same for 89.

That is a great PDF with a lot of information in it.
This may be a little easier for you to understand...
(By the way, flaming river is a STEERING COLUMN company, if you have questions, I'm sure they would be the best people to call/email)

@Keoman, hey thanks so much for the wiring scheme, looking good !
Till so far i have decoded the following, who can help me decode F, E, D, C and B ? Please check the picture below !
(btw i send the steering column company an e-mail, still waiting for a reply)
EDIT : i have a reply from Flaming River :
Hi Rakesh – the wiring scheme you’re seeing is the drawing for our aftermarket steering columns. Unfortunately we can not assist you with the wiring for original column. Have you tried browsing through any Pontiac message boards? Perhaps a knowledgeable member will be able to assist you.
Thank you,

Well it seems that i have to search further ....
Anyone ?

Re: steering column electronics 89 -> 91
To answer question 1) those smaller gauge wires on the end of connector #1 is for the steering wheel controls AND your horn. Of note, that connector you are holding is the turn signal switch. The switch comes with all that wire attached. I'd remove your old one and transplant that on your 91 column. Another option is to buy a replacement one "Wells SW1521" or "duralast SW 1521" considering your connector is broke. Mine broke too but I replaced it for different reasons.
Question #3 what is the orange pair wrapped in a black sheath. I think it's VATS as mine looks like that but the wires are white (I have an 88) if its disabled don't worry about it.
The last connector set that doesn't match up I'll have to get my shop manual and look at my car to figure out.
Personally I'd take every bit of electronics from your 89 replace the turn signal switch( not required) and put it on the column for the 91

Re: steering column electronics 89 -> 91
If your GTA has steering wheel controls - and you want to keep them,...... do yourself a favor and foget about installing that 91 column into your car.
The black "flat blade" connector on the GTA column is for criuse control - the 91 doesn't have that - the cruise connector is different on the 91 and uses regular wires
The 91 column has a 'clockspring' inside it for the air bag - the GTA column didn't
The wiper wiring from 89-91 is a miss-match, at the minimum the plug would need to be re-pinned or cut/spliced.
The GTA column has steering wheel control parts/wiring that will probably not fit inside the 91 column.

I understand that $$ is tight and spending as little as need is important - but some things are worhth paying for. Keep the 91 coulmn intact and sell it to help fund the purchase of the proper column for your ride !
