Another wiper issue thread.. Need help huge
Ok its been a year almost and I cant get the wipers to work at all on the car. Its been a on and off battle but this year its the last thing I need to do to the car for now. Well accept beat the hell out of it lol
So heres the issue
First off I dont have a delay on my motor as its from a 86 without delay. All I got is off / low / high and the washer fluid
When its turned on all it does is go up and down 3 inches on the window with the wiper blades and keeps repeating that motion. The assembley also makes a cruntch / thud sound as it goes around as its coming off the pin on the motor or hitting the inside of the cowl area. When I pulled it out of storage I thought for ***** and giggles il try it as hey who knows it might work. Well it did for 2 full swipes then back to what its doing now.
1 - I want to make sure I put the wiper arm transmission in right as that might be the issue but I dont think so
2 - is it a electrical issue?
3 - bad grounding surface? I know they ground to the firewall
Heres what i get when I check the voltage as I go thru the settings
4 Pin Connector in the side at the top of the motor
GREEN - off 12V / low 12V
Grey - low 12V
Pink - When i turn the washer part I get 12V
Yellow - I never got anything from it
2 Pin Connector at the bottom of the wiper motor
Yellow - High 12V
Purple - never got anything
Before you tell me to get a new motor I have tried 4 different ones with and without delay. Im completely stumped. I have a camaro shop manual for electrical and its pretty useless beside a diagram. Id like go get this solved ASAP as Id like to enjoy the car more and take it to work and so on but with no wipers i dont want to get caught in the rain

Re: Another wiper issue thread.. Need help huge
It is difficult to long-distance troubleshoot anything, but my 87 bird had the same issue with the same wiper motor. It turned out to be a bad ground connection on the motor itself (two wire plug). I cleaned and tightened the spade connection and it worked perfectly.

I will try it out and see what happens. Im gonna take the wiper motor off as well and clean up the contacts to the firewall where it grounds as well to make sure that isnt a issue either.
Please if anyone has a idea of what it could be Im open to it and will try it

Re: Another wiper issue thread.. Need help huge
Ok I cleaned up the grounds and it did the same thing just barely moving up and down. Then all of the sudden it went full way and went back to the up and down a few inches.
So I went to the local autoparts place and decided to get a new one. Well theat didnt work at all. I got the sam thing a few inches up and down. So I have basically narrowed it to a wiring issue.
Can anyone tell me what they get voltage wise from their connectors and in the 3 positions just so I have a referance as to where its going wrong.
Thanks

The stubby arm attached to the motor should be rotating completely around. Install it so that there is no slip. IIRC the mount boss should be slotted or squared.

is the arm inside the cowling area hitting the firewall? you can install them upside down and they will hit the firewall, and go back causing about three inches.
it took me forever to figure that out on my truck.

naf - That nut is reefed on pretty tight. I know the sloted part and its there I just cant figure out wahts going on there. By the way what does IIRC mean?
tylercamaro - Im not sure as it might be upside down but im sure it isnt. Dont think its hitting either as it does go all the way 1 out of every 75 turns LOL
Anyone got a pic of the cowl area where the wiper transmission is just to make sure I got it in right.

if its not that it sounds like your curcuit boards inside a frying. not sure how similar they are to 88-98 gm trucks but theres a thread on how to fix the boards on gmt400

Ive tried 4 different wipers and one brand new out of the box one. All where the same so its got to be a electrical issue for sure

Re: Another wiper issue thread.. Need help huge
Let me try to make it clearer:
The motor is not the issue. The short (maybe 2 inch) rod that attaches to the motor shaft should be solidly attached to the shaft and spin with the motor COMPLETELY around, like 360 degrees each rotation. The reason it sometimes works is likely because once in a while it catches and makes a full turn. Stop chasing electricity that you can't see. Take the transmission apart and re-install it. It'll become apparent pretty quickly what went wrong.
IIRC: If I Recall Correctly

Re: Another wiper issue thread.. Need help huge
I will try taking the transmission out but it did the same with the new motor as well? All I think I got is low speed but all I want is low anyways as I never use high.
I will pull it apart tomorrow and see what happens

Re: Another wiper issue thread.. Need help huge
I finally figured it out as it was a electrical issue
For some od reason on low the motor wasnt turning on and there is a seperate wire that goes to the motor to lock the wiper transmission and lets it turn it. Well in the video the wire going to the lock mechanisim isnt getting power. As soon as I sent power to it volia I have wipers. It happened to be the grey wire for the lock and the yellow at the bottom of the pump for low speed.
I had high speed but it still isnt locking as well as I have to redo the wiring for that as well when I get a chance but at least I have low speed and the washer setting
I will show a few pics and what I did to fix it later on when I get home as im out cruisin right now. Just want to make sure if someone else has the same issue they can fix it quick

Re: Another wiper issue thread.. Need help huge
Ok so heres goes my explaination of how I fixed it
In this connector I will explain what I found out

In the L shaped connector
- the one by itself is for the washer pump which is pink
- the one next to it is yellow and I never got anything out of it on my wiring in high or low
- the one in the middle is grey which got 12v in low but not in high so high does the same free spin now ( found out this is like a lock for the wiper motor to move the wiper transmission )
- the one at the bottom it is green which is 12v all the time when its off and in the low position but nothing in high
The bottom 2 connectors are for the wiper motor either in low or high depending on where the wiper switch is to power it

The top one in the pic is for high speed ( Pink or pirple ) and the bottom one is for low speed (yellow )
So to get mine to work on low I was getting 12v on the green and when I turned the switch on i was getting 12v on the grey wire but none to the actual motor speed on the bottom. I spliced a wire from the 12v grey wire to the yellow low speed. So far everything works fine and i just have to wire up the high speed as I get power to the motor but not the locking grey wire. Ill end up doing the same thing as I did for the low speed.
I know its not what I should really do but for the time being it works
