Radio Harness Problems

Hey guys, first post here. I was planning on making my first post the beginning of a build thread, but this is irritating me and I hate wiring. So I bought an '88 IROC a couple months ago. When I bought the car the radio was wired in wrong so the deck only came on when the parking lights/headlights were on. They spliced into the factory harness and cut the plugs off instead of buying an adapter. I went to a yard and got all the plugs needed and wired it up correctly, but I don't get any power to the deck or the dome/floor lights/dash lights/headlights unless I run a wire from the fuse box and splice it into the orange power wire, and then it only works when the key is on/acc so my deck resets itself every time the car is turned off. Where does the orange power wire go so I can find the reason it isn't putting out any juice? Also, there is a pink wire under the dash that goes to something and I have no idea what. If I apply power to it I hear a whine in the dash for a moment and it goes away. It's in the passenger side, and if you hold your hand where the glove box should be, you can feel it powering up.

Other than lack of consistent power, and not knowing what that wire is, everything is working fine (for once).

Any suggestions?

Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the red wire at the headlight switch, making sure your jumpers are disconnected.

If there is no power on the
red wire, most likely a fusible link is blown.

Fusible Links usually look like a one inch plastic rod in line with the wire and are located near the battery or at the starter.

Isn't a power antenna one that is retractable? Mine is just the fixed one that's like 3 feet long.

Yes, however the harness might contain that wire, even tho unused.

That wire can also go to an amp relay if the car was optioned with it.

Re: Radio Harness Problems

I have a similar problem... I had an aftermarket radio in mine... it powered fine, it just stopped playing CDs, I got a new one and installed the exact same way but no power from my orange wire. If it was the fusable link was blown wouldnt all my accessories not work? i.e. Dome light?

Solved my problem,

Check your ACC fuse and your ARC fuse, your car may have been opted for the bose system/power antenna and wired as such.

The speaker wiring doesn't seem like the Bose system. I'll check that fuse. Since I've posted this though, my car magically fixed itself. There's a short somewhere.

Really late update, still haven't checked the wiring yet with winter still looming, but the car does blow the radio fuse the moment you turn the key.

Re: Radio Harness Problems

Have you done a continuity test for the radio circuit yet? If there is a short to ground somewhere in the circuit, that will cause a fuse to blow immediately.

I have no, but the previous owner shoved a spade connector into a part of the fusebox that is hot-while-on. Might be shorting it. As soon as the weather is more forgiving I'm going to diagnose it.
