Firebird will crank up and run but will shut off after running for a while

Car: 1983 pontiac firebird
Engine: 2.8l v6
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: unsure
Firebird will crank up and run but will shut off after running for a while
i am new to this page i just bought a 1983 firebird it has the 2.8l HO v6 engine 2 barrel carb it has the 5 speed transmission. thecar will crank up and run and drive fine but after about 5 mins of driving the car will sputter and jerk and shut of and will not crank right back up but if i let it sit for a little while it will crank right back up what could it be?

After it stalls while driving, turn the ignition off and pull over.
Open the hood and operate the accelerator pump by hand.
Does the accelerator pump squirt fuel into carb when you do that?
