No Start

My Camaro is not starting. I turn the switch and nothing happens. I recently replaced the starter, and I have read that it maybe the neutral brake switch. I was thinking it was the ignition switch, and now I am thinking it maybe the nbs. Is there any tale tale signs which it maybe? I am having symptoms, but not sure which ones would go to this problem. The only thing I get now when I turn my key to the start position, is my cel, res, and only when in the start position my brake light. I also noticed that all of my gauges wants to do right, the temp gauge goes all the way over when switch is turned. I do know that sometimes when I turn the switch to start it will sometimes click between run and start.

Re: No Start

IIRC your car has VATS

https://www.thirdgen.org/vats_passkey_system

Cuts out the starter if the resistor on the key is wrong or can't be read correctly

Do a search on here for VATS ; many posts

Re: No Start

If you have confirmed VATS is not the problem

Is the battery fully charged ( actually checked ) ?

Why?
Did it start correctly after you replaced the starter ?

It won't crank over !
You have to test each part off the starter circuit on on it's own to confirm if it is working or not,
could even be a wiring ( bad connection somewhere) problem

Re: No Start

I had my starter replaced in June. I have driven 4,000 miles and no problems. I know battery is good it was replacdd in June as well. I have full power on my interior lights, no dimming on the lights. The solenoid isn't engaging at all. I will check the battery voltage and key resistance in a little. Let me know what else you need. I drive it everyday, and this morning was first time I've had any problems.

I tested my battery, I'm getting 12.6 volts and it is dark, will test remote starter wire tomorrow. I am planning on taking key to dealership Monday to have it tested.

Do you have a spare key to try?
The resistor pellet gets worn and doesn't make a good connection
Try cleaning the key and the contacts inside the Ign barrel that read the key.

Use the remote to crank the engine over with the key on.
If it fires up you have a problem somewhere with the starter wiring ;
power not getting from the Ign switch to starter ( through the starter relay and NSS )

If it just cranks over and won't fire you have a VATS problem ; key not being read or faulty VATS module

This morning I went to try again and I noticed when I turned to the run position, before I turned to start. One extra light was on, that wasn't on yesterday. It was my security light, turned to start and she fired right up. This evening tried it again. First time, no security light, and no start no click or turning over. Let go the security light came on and I truned key, she started. Im having key test tomorrow, it is 22 years old. I'm going to see if they will give me wiring schematics of the security system. Test the vats system.

No security light ; the key is not being read correctly
Reading the key will only tell you it's resistance value; doesn't mean it works in your Ign as you found out .

All here if you search

Nothing to test , you obviously have a key reading problem as proven by how it starts sometimes .Get a new key cut with the correct resistor value ,
If that doesn't work you need to replace the contacts in the Ign barrel that read the key
or do the VATS resistor bypass trick to eliminate the key resistor

The dealership cannot read the key at all. Thats the good news, I have found the answer. The bad news GM has started phasing out the key code with the VIN's, they told me I have to tow it up there and they have to go into the system and find code and cut a key. Does this sound right to you??

Record the key # ( 1-15 ) so next time you know it or if you later want to do the resistor bypass.
