tach problems

hi, i have an 84 camaro with the 2.8l in it...it didnt originaly have a tach in it, so i bought a different cluster and a V6 tach, and to no suprise it was wrong, i found the fix for it and did that, now it seem to read close enough while crusing but seems to still be reading wrong as the rpms get higher...reads 3000-3500, when its at around 4000 or so acording to my little aftermarket one, any help would be great...thanks in advance!

Re: tach problems

I would install a 500k Pot on the resistor network and tune it until it matched your aftermarket tach.

A Tach Plan

Desolder pins 4 & 10.

Use the potentiometer.

Solder it across traces 4 & 10.

Move the potentiometer to half way.

Start the engine and compare the tach reading with a test equipment quality tach.

Dial it in, unsolder the potentiometer, measure it and install a matching resistor.

Because you’re using a 1MΩ pot it might be difficult to dial it in.

Also, on or near the PCB you’ll see a capacitor, replace it.

Re: tach problems

ok so i havent had time to work on the tach till now, been busy with work and another project....but do you know how big the capacitor is and kinda what it looks like, im not sure exactly, i just dont want to get one that is too big or to small for that matter

also as i was messing with it today i tryed using conductive ink and re-"inked" the bad spot on the resister block, it helped but still off by 500-700ish any input on going that route?

thanks in advance

I don’t know the cap size but due to the fact your tach is off by only 600 RPM the cap doesn’t need to be replaced.

You will be able to dial the tach in VIA the potentiometer mentioned in post #4.
