4 fusible links near battery. Stamped numbers?

I got an 86 IROC. Im about to begin rewiring the mess that is near the battery. My question is about the fusible links. There are 3. One has a 20 stamped on it and the other 2 have the numbers 16. Are these the amp ratings? Also the big barrel looking link with 4 wires coming out of it has the number 20 on it. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Links usually are identified by indicating their internal gage, not by amps.

One usually selects a Link two commonly available sizes physically smaller.

For example, if you want to protect a 12 gage circuit, you usually insert a 16 gage Link.

If you wanted to convert to fuses, (not recommended) they would take up a lot more room, and not be as safe because you will have to run unprotected wires to the new, large, fuse blocks, due to the fact you would be using fuses of 50 amps and up.

A Link protects a circuit downstream which branches out to many fused circuits.

They are the wire sizes, in mm.

2.0mm & 1.6mm.

They will actually melt at around 80A for the larger and 50A for the smaller, depending on how long the overload lasts.

Even worse about fuses is, there's a contact point (2 individual pieces of metal that merely "touch") at each end of them; virtually 100% positively guaranteed to result in intermittent connections at a CRITICAL place, more likely sooner than later, on account of the high power flow at that point. If that's what you want to install into your car (intermittents... works sometimes, fails randomly), then fuses are just the way to do it.
