Alternator clearance

Has anyone run into an issue with alternator to valve cover clearance? 1989 5.0 tpi, the boss sticking out of the rear solid hits my tall aluminum valve cover , can't install it. mine has the lug sticking out that accepts a bolt thru wire. can't even reclock it because i can't get it apart to get case attaching bolt riser past lower mounting bolt boss. hopin someone has seen this and has a cure. i believe i need a solid half in less sticking out. Thanks!

Re: Alternator clearance

Mark the spot and massage the valve cover enough to give adequate space for the lug.

Hit up a shop that does aluminum and have them notch the area and re-weld it

or take the bolts out of the back of the alternator and turn the case, AKA clock it, so it fits correctly without all that nonsense you wrote..

Re: Alternator clearance

Or put valve covers on it THAT FIT.

The problem isn't the alt, it's the VCs.

Re: Alternator clearance

Might gain enough clearance if you take the alternator apart and swap that lug type output terminal to the stud and nut style, trim down the stud and use a thin nut.

Re: Alternator clearance

I have the same problem as the OP. I was looking at the factory alum brackets from the 5.7 trucks same years. They look to set the alternator up higher; has anybody tried one of those? Does the offset from face of block put the ALT & PS pulleys in-line or we talking new water pump, AC bracket, etc? I would think the harmonic is boss.

I've been mocking up a spare alternator by clocking it and grinding the backside, but I hate the aesthetic of the tight tolerance. And because of the clocking, the rear brace can't get installed. Right now, I'm working on some offset brackets to move the alternator up about 3/4-1" from the stock height to at least get the batt stud up higher. Thoughts welcome.

Re: Alternator clearance

I did finally get up the nerves to pull apart my unit enough to reclock it. built a ton of alternators before but apparently not one of these , was a bit shaky getting it apart but it seems ok. I dont haqve nearly the issue you have with covers , i am good at this point just with reclock. Thanks!

I ended up just reclocking mine and being ok,not nearly as close as your fit. have built a lot of alternators but not this style where you have to be a bit rough to separate enough to turn but its all good.Thanks. sorry my pics appear huge before submitting, not sure how to fix that

Thanks for the clarification. The VCs are for clearing the roller rockers below. We're currently working on notching the VC to clear the alternator. To your point, I hope I don't lose any HP doing so
