Engine light constantly on

Hi all.
I'm having a problem with the engine light and i hope some of you has experienced it before to advise me a solution.

So i have this 1982 Trans Am, engine was swapped, same 305 but they used an edelbrock carb instead of the crossfire injection.
I don't know if the problem is related to this mod but the light is on when i turn the ignition on, it stays on when i turn the engine one and i kinda heard it laughing at me

Anyway i tried the trick of the paperclip in the ALDL socket (actually i have some special metal keys made just for that purpose) but the light doesn't flash, it stays on no matter what.

I checked underneat the dash (passenger side) to make sure the ecu was still there and it is still there.

Am i doing something wrong? Or maybe there's something i don't know about the 82 model? I'm so spoiled with the 91....

Thank you

That's going to be part of your problem if the ECM is even still connected and working. You dont have the injection system hooked up and it thinks you still do. On an 82 with a carb, I'd just pull the bulb out. The ECM is not doing anything at that point. It's not controlling fuel delivery, monitoring emissions (correctly anyway), or anything else it's supposed to do.

The problem is the state inspection...

Inspection Direction

If your engine meets the emission rules but the
SES light fools the inspector to make him think something is wrong, you can turn the light off by disconnecting the brown wire with a
White stripe (many cars) at the ECM.

The above has advantages over removing the bulb such as the lamp test and ALDL will still illuminate it.

Re: Engine light constantly on

Ok i'm sorry it took me so long to do some tests but i had another problem with a Grand Prix that kept me busy.
Now i took a multimeter and i found out that the pin A of the ALDL plug has no negative (no continuity with chassis ground, or negative from battery), so i traced down the wire (black with white stripe) from the plug to the ECU for continuity and there was continuity. So i took a wire from the chassis and i put it in the B of the ALDL plug. Nothing, the light stays on and does not flash.

So i decided to take the ECU off and inspect it. I soon realized that the there was a burned out track and i "fixed it" in the hope i could see some results... but nothing.

I also noticed a couple of other things.

1. With the ecu disconnected the SES light stays on exactly as with the ECU.
2. If i jump the points A and B i get the negative (Black with white stripe) on two wires: White with black stripe and one of the two brown (yes i have two brown on the same connector).

Do you guys think i need a new ECU?
Here ppl doing inspection plug in the ALDL connector to the computer so removing the bulb or turning it off won't work.

Thank you

I am not 100% certain , but I thought on a 1982 model your SES light has a driver module between it and the ECM , and so that is why the light remains on even though the ECM is disconnected . If this is a crossfire injection that has been replaced with a regular carb. then you could be in deep trouble WRT the SES light and your Texas inspection . The ECM is seeing the lack of it's needed parts (the crossfire injectors , among likely others) and putting on the light . The only "real" way to properly put out the light would be to restore the system to it's normal functioning if Texas is that strict about these old cars and their fuel systems .

Re: Engine light constantly on

I don't remember precisely but if i'm not wrong on my old 91 the SES came on for a second or two and then it went off and in case there was something wrong it came back on. But there was this "check" period.

This one stays on all the time so i'm a little confused. And honestly i have no interest in restoring the crossfire system, at this point i may think about installing a TPI but i don't now if it is enough to fool the system.

Problem is that i'm not able to make it flash so if there's an error code memorized i don't know what that is.

I've also bought a USB cable and an ALDL plug to build my own interface but i've found two problems, the first i don't know where the DATA point is (too different versions on google) and i can't find definition files for tunerPRO for te 82.

Any ideas?
