85 Berlinetta dash glitching

Digital dash in my Berlinetta seems to be glitching/spazing out. Car has been sitting for about a week after seafoaming it and went to start it up today and was reading weird, all fuses look good. It's been raining a lot in my area so idk if that has something to do with it or it's life is ending. Really don't want to have to replace the thing , any ideas?

Looks like what happens when any digital thing starts to die :/

If you're sure that all the electronics are good I'd say that it's just on it's last leg. You could try cleaning all the contacts really well.

Yep, check the contacts on the connectors. If you're handy and know how to solder you could try opening it up and re-flowing the solder and look for caps that might have dried out or blown. Humidity issues are sometimes related to dirt and/or cold solder joints.

Re: 85 Berlinetta dash glitching

I got the cluster out this morning and noticed It is a re-manufactured part so I'm going to take it to the local chevy dealer here and see what they can do. I have no Idea how to solder, but Probably need to learn if I wanna keep this thing .

Re: 85 Berlinetta dash glitching

A local dealer probably hasn't dealt with something like that for years. IMO, it would be like taking a carburetor to them and asking them to rebuild it. At best they would probably farm it out to a separate repair shop. Those can be expensive depending on what's wrong with it. But it might save in the end if you take it to (or ship to) a place that specializes in older electronic gauges, or an alternative would be a small local shop that could at least look at it and re-flow the solder etc.

It's relatively easy to learn to re-flow the solder if you pick up the right equipment and follow advice correctly. Plenty of videos out there or I can try to help too.

John in RI might have advice on this as well and should be posting here shortly. If not you could try sending him a PM.

Re: 85 Berlinetta dash glitching

Took the cluster to a dealer today and after a few phone calls the department they have work on clusters said they could fix it but a bit costly. So for now i'm going to wait and save some money and have them tinker with it (dropping in new radiator soon). Thank you for the input and I'll post back when I have results and hopefully help out others with same issues! Still gonna look into learning soldering, especially with owning the "digital' camaro

Re: 85 Berlinetta dash glitching

In the meantime I understand that you can get an ap for your phone so you know your speed while driving.

Here are a few places I found with a quick Google search:

http://www.instrumentclusters.com/
^ Says that they have 84-89 Corvette parts so they should be familiar with the electronics of the era.
http://drspeedometer.com/
http://www.mrwhizard.com/
www.bobsspeedometer.com

If you spend some time searching I'm sure you can find something within reason. Otherwise start hitting the local junk yards and see if you can grab an extra one. Make sure it's for a V8.

Yep, that's true. But with everyone else thinking the same thing you might get lucky. Craigslist is another place to look for cars being parted out.

I was going to say too that if you do open it up and can get some hi resolution pics of the circuit board I might be able to spot something.

Re: 85 Berlinetta dash glitching

* Update *
Found a digital cluster on Ebay for a decent price, going to see if this one works before I ship out the original for repairs. Seller said was working when pulled but if not it will make a great test bed to mess around with .
