Can I use an 82 z28 engine bay wire harness in an 84 z28 with a 350 out of a 71 c10?
Hey all,
Long time member, just haven't posted before.
Anyhow, I'm trying to put together an 84 Z28 that got a 350 out of a 71 c10 from the previous owner.
I've got most of the engine put back together, but started to go through the wiring, and found the previous owner totally botched the wiring harness in the engine bay. Wires were terminated and just hanging all over (or they were broken and left there, not sure.) and some wires were held together with a crappy electrical tape job, and others were just twisted together, though they appear to be completely wrong colors and uses.
So. I've got a parts car with no engine, but it is a 1982 Z28 with the crossfire setup (hood and all wiring there!).
My question is, can I pull the wiring harness from the parts car and use it in place of the Frankenstein one in my 84?
The 84 I'm putting together is carbed with an edelbrock 1406, and a performer 3701 intake manifold (not sure if relevant, but want to provide as much detail as possible.)
Thanks all!

you COULD. but the best idea is to get a harness from a carb car. the CFI one will have/not have more wires than you need for a carb car

It sounds like you won't be using the computer and if not you could probably just clean up the wire ends or take out the harness and remove the wiring you don't need. If you leave the harness in you could cut the wires at an offset (and fold the long end over) to reduce the chance of the ends touching.
The carb/manifold is relevant imo, because if you're not using the computer, the 700r4 will need to be modified along with needing a TV cable adapter at the carburetor, and you'll need a stand alone distributor.
IMO, the crossfire harness won't do you much good, but if in good condition might come in handy for someone else for restoring a crossfire set up some time down the road.

Thanks for the replies folks, I was afraid that would be the answer.
I've looked at the wiring diagrams, and it's just too much for what I feel comfortable doing. Do y'all have any suggestions on where to find a replacement harness by chance?
Thanks again!

I sent Hawks a message asking about one, haven't heard back. I'll follow up with them next week and see if they've got something.
Thanks!
