Temp gauge not working

Transmission: 5 Spd
Axle/Gears: 373 Gears
Temp gauge not working
Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and recently purchased an 84 5.0L 305 HO Z28. I am having an issue with the temp guage pinned down and maxed out when the car is off or on. Anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong. I understand I can put an after market guage in, but I would love to try and keep the original.

Sounds like the needle is jammed against the dial.
Remove the clear plastic and inspect the needle for a bend.
