Extending engine bay wires to hide. Are there any I should not extend? 89 350TPI

Hello.

I am in the process of cleaning the engine bay and trying to relocate wires in out of sight locations. It is looking like a number of wires may need extending to hide them adequately. I know I cannot extend the MAF sensor wires as it will throw off readings. however are there any other sensors that I should avoid extending the wires?

Thanks

Jay

Who told you that you couldn't extend the MAF wires ?

ANY wire , that is a simple stranded or solid copper wire , CAN be extended if done properly !

The only kinds of wire you can't extend are things like spark plug wires and the silver colored wire that is attached to O2 sensors between the sensor and it's connector .

For any of the copper wires you want to extend , and with the idea that your not extending them much past a foot or two , the increased resistance is SO minute that the circuit will not be affected in the least . The most important thing , naturally , is to have 100% proper connections on any wire you plan to extend , which means a properly soldered and insulated "western union" splice , and wire of at least the same gauge and type (solid or stranded) as the original .

I read a post on this forum that said extending the maf wiring changed the sensor reading somehow, good to hear that is not the case. Any wires I extend will be correctly soldered for sure! Many thanks!

Theoretically... altering any circuit where resistance is used to measure or gauge another value (such as in the case of a Mass Air Flow sensor circuit) the values or readings will be affected. However more often than not; a poor method of electrical connection (mating the extended wires together incorrectly) causes the erroneous readings by creating unnecessary resistance , not the addition of extended wire length. Of course an extremely long amount of extended wire can also cause such an effect (creating unnecessary resistance) this is most often not the case.

The only circuits that are not recommended to be altered (Lengthened or shortened) are AirBag specific sensitive resistance measuring circuits or any type of circuit that uses the same principles for other reasons.
