Camaro Speed Sensor swap in S10
Camaro Speed Sensor swap in S10
Hey guys...have a question for you. I don't have a Camaro, but I do have a 84 S truck that has a 3.4 HT crate motor in it. This is basically as you know a 3.4 from a later Camaro. It currently has a TBI EFI swap that I did last year. I am thinking of swapping over to a MPFI system. I know I should be able to use the intake and probably most of my existing wiring harness (with modifications), but the speed sensor is my concern. Currently the truck has an optical sensor for the VSS in the speedometer. What Camaro years used what type of sensor, and what (in your opinions) would be the easiest route for me to make this swap using the stock gauges?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Camaro Speed Sensor swap in S10
maybe this will help out somewhat.
I converted my 91 Camaro from tbi to tpi. tbi and 6 cylinders use a buffer box to convert the sensor reading to the speedometer. tpi does not need the buffer box.
there are two types of vss for the Camaro for the later years, I think 90-92. might be earlier models that used it when the cable was eliminated. they are the 22mm and a 53 mm. it seems the autos use the larger one. the 5 speeds, use the 22mm. the 22mm are no longer reproduced and sources have dried out.
I would suggest you check to see if the 3.4 is running a buffer box. there is a write up here on tgo about bypassing the buffer.
I don't have any idea how to convert to your s10 gauges.
good luck with it.
