I have an 87 firebird. It has a 3.1 v6, with a 2.8 ecm. My fuel pump runs off of a big red wire coming out of the fuse box at the ign port. and my oil gauge is pegged to the max. Also my fuel pump relay has really bad wires on all of its connectors.
Given all of this.... I would like to make my own fuel pump circuit and get my oil gauge to work again. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I can wire up a simple circuit and get rid of the Fuel pump relay. I would like to use as much of the factory stuff as possible. Any light shed on this would be hugely appreciated. this is a totally new field for me.
Rigt now im trying to gather information. if it were as simple as you think, to just snap my fingers and make it all stock, that would be the idea. i dont see why i need the relay and need the oil pressure talking to the fuel pump. can anyone lead me to the info?
Sometimes there is a reason things are done the way they are.
The relay is to prevent fires.
Think of it as a low voltage switch that turns on and off a high voltage/amp switch.
I'm sure the relay wires have coverings that have shrunk down. The grease that's in the relay connection will cause that over time. If you gently pull up on the rubber around the wires, it will pull back up into place. (I cleaned the wires with carb cleaner, opened up the big part of the crimp and slid the wires in and re -crimped them. Good as new.)
The oil psi switch is a backup if the relay fails.

Imagine this.... You get in a crash, rupture a fuel line and are unconscious. The pump will continue to run and pour fuel out until the tank is empty. May seem a little far fetched, but freak things happen.
I agree with you guys. I am not looking to hack it up any more than it already is. unfortunately, the harness as been cut up. can someone show me a diagram of how to restore it?
3 wires mean it is a oil psi sending unit (4 the dash) and the fuel pump switch.
2 wires means its just a fuel pump switch with the oil psi sending unit up top by dist.
