odometer

i need some help / info please . i have a 86 firebird and the problem is the speedometer works but the odometer and trip odometer does not. do i need to replace the cluster or guage ? any help would be appreciated . thankyou

Good speedometer / Bad odometer is a common problem with our cars and yes , the easy way is to get a gauge that works and replace the bad one . You could get just the gauge if you can find the gauge being sold by iself , or if not get the whole cluster and put that in . Just beware that there are differences in the clusters , this is not one of the items that truly spans 82/92 because of various changes over the 10 year span our cars were manufactured . For instance , early third gens had a cable driven speedometer whereas later ones had electronically driven . Another option is , if the person is still around , there was a guy here who fixed the gauges for people . I know he did tachometers for fact cause I remember reading the posts on "tach reads too high" , and if you search him out maybe he can help you if you want your original fixed ....
