I've read many many post's regarding "NO START" conditions. It seems a lot of folks automatically assume it's a VATS issue when really after further troubleshooting they find out the real reason of the "NO START" was a loose wire at the starter or some other simple fix, and VATS is getting a bad rap.
The #1 thing VATS does is to isolate the starter enable relay and engine control module (ECM) fuel enable input..meaning it will not turn over....PERIOD. nada, zero turnover, nothing.
The other myth is that VATS will shut the engine off while going down the road. Not true. VATS is not even playing a part at that stage. And if it did, can you imagine all the accidents and lawsuits against GM and others
I also see the repairs to "DISABLE VATS" by adding or doing the resistor deal under the dash. Granted, this fix will work and eliminate the issue, but now you no longer have the Anti Theft feature that was designed to keep "your car yours!"
Here is the chart for the keys, 15 total
You can also have VATS taken out of the loop by having the chip reprogrammed and have VATS deleted entirely.
So with this info, along with a Service Manual and other troubleshooting processes, I hope this helps out in the future.
And another note....Not all VATS systems are bad. Mine failed once in 27 years.......the resistor was dirty.
Thanks for the info. Great read.
One question, How often does the Starter Enable Relay fail that you know of, and where could I buy a replacement if needed?
