Dash lights stuck ON

Ever since I bought my 89 Firebird TBI The dash lights have been stuck on. During the day and every day. I have tried to dim the lights with the dimming switch and nothing. I have replaced the dimming switch and the headlight switch and nothing. I looked under the dash and see wires in good condition. Although, I am no electrical engineer. I need any assistance any of you can provide to clear this problem. Thanks.

If you've replaced the switch & the dimmer, power is somehow getting to the gauge lights other than a bad switch.

In the fuse panel there is a fuse labeled INST, should be a 5A fuse. If you pluck it out the lights should go out as well.

I'll assume there's an aftermarket stereo in your car ? If there is, there might be a chance the wire that used to control the dimmer of the car stereo could be somehow hooked up accidentally to the constant +12v of the radio.

OK.GOT a 5 amp fuse. pulled the fuse block cover.Looked for "INST" and found something close ... "INST LPS". There is no way the 5 amp fuse will fit there.

I ripped out the radio.Still, the lights are on. I noticed a special connector in the radio pod location, it used to be connected to the factory radio. Well, that connector has two wires..BLACK/ORAGE. and it is not connected to anything. That is about the only wire not connected.

P.S. The dash lights only come on only when the key is turned.

I hope that helped to more solve my problem. THANKS.

Somebody correct me if im wrong, but the orange wire is for the acc power source. The black wire is a ground for the orginal light for the radio.Go to the j/y and pull a complete light,a connector with a gray and black wire. The best spot is under the shifter plate.Connect the wires to the gray and black in the radio pod, when the gauge lights are on this will be on.And hook the orange to your radios acc power wire. This is what I did to my Camaro. My lights would come on for a sec then blow the fuse, just one damn light hooked to their correct wires fixed my problem.Hoped I helped.
