Turn signal lights light up when braking?

hey guys, so today as I pulled into Walmart I noticed someone was following me, when I parked he told me that when I brake both of my turn signals light up. I checked it out and he's right. the turn signals still flash correctly when I have my foot on the brake, it's just both will be lit up when my foot is on the brakes and when I hit the turn signal the correct signal will flash while the other one stays solid. Is this normal for 86 trans ams?

Re: Turn signal lights light up when braking?

Brake and turn signal are both "bright" and running lights are "dim" on most if not all cars. Most cars use the same filament (double filament bulb) or use a brighter bulb for brake light and turn signal indications while using the dimmer filament (double filament bulb) or separate dimmer bulb for running lights. If you have a ground problem, it will sometimes show up as one running light going out when you hit the brakes or possibly when the turn signal is used. Sometimes both turn signals will blink when you turn the directional on one way or the other. All kinds of wacky things can happen with a bad ground to the rear of the car. If you think the signals are not functioning properly, check and clean all the ground wires at the rear of the car. HTH!

Thanks for that wealth of information, the thing is the turn signals are working properly. it's just when I brake the turn signals both light up with the brake lights and if I hit either turn signal the correct one will flash while the other stays solid. This all only occurs with my foot on the brake.

You didn’t say how long you owned the car.

If not long, it’s possible it was mis-wired by the PO.

As a driver, you’ve probably seen how the fearful drivers put ridiculously bright or flashing brake-light bulbs in the sockets.

Make sure all bulbs are the correct type.

Make sure all 3 contact bulbs are not installed backwards.

Some wild symptoms have been reported when bulbs are the incorrect type or installed 180° out of phase.

Make sure all the ground wires back there make a good connection to chassis ground.

If all of above is normal, remove the STOP HAZ fuse.

Now, with a fused jumper wire, (15 or 20 amp is fine) jump the
+ battery terminal to one of the light blue wires going to the brake-light bulbs.

What happens when you do that?

Sorry about that, I've had the car for about 3 years now and have replaced all the bulbs, I used the numbers off of the old ones to replace the new ones. The previous owner did do some funky wiring but I've fixed all the problem areas I believe. I'll pull the bulbs tomorrow and try rotating and seeing what that does.

Noobish question but What do you mean by contact bulbs?

I'd appreciate it if anyone reading this could film the back of their car while braking and then hitting the turn signal and telling me what lights up

What I meant by 3 contact bulbs is the dual filament bulbs.

You’ll notice one of the nubs is higher than the other in respect to the bottom of the base.

Frequently you can look in the socket to see which way the bulb should oriented.
