Please help with how to hardwire my ac without ecm
Hi Guys,
This is my first post to the site so please bear with me as I'm unaware of any protocol to ask for help. I need help getting my 1989 E code Camaro on the road. I bought it as a roller and threw in a 350 w/Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock 600cfm carb, Headman headers Flowmaster exhaust with a 700r4. It has a serpentine setup with the A/C compressor mounted on the passenger side. I was lucky to find a car with all the air conditioner components in place and they appear to be functional if wired correctly. The wiring harness has been cut down to just the bare minimum so the there is no wiring for the air conditioner or ECM. In the box of extras that came with the car, I got all the connectors for the A/C system but not connected to any wires. I was hoping that someone could help me. Id like to do it without tracking down a new harness and ECM. Im pretty handy with electronics so I think with help, I could get it done. Thank you so much for looking and any help would be very appreciated!

Don't know if it will help but AustinThirdgen.org has wiring diagrams for your E vin car showing the wiring for the AC system. Apparently, the ECM was not used to control any AC functions other than it received a signal saying the AC was on. I believe this had to do with idle speed and other things to control engine stalling and such. There is no relay controlled by the ECM so all wiring from the control head to the various pressure switches and to the compressor clutch can be used/replaced and you can have a fully functioning AC system without the ECM. The engine diagram shows the wiring for the cooling fan and the relay from the AC control head and the body wiring (second part) shows the wiring for the pressure switches and the compressor including the fuse box connections and the fusible links, basically everything you need to wire the AC back to original. If you only have the connectors with no wire, you may want to see if anyone has done an AC delete and have the necessary wiring harness available, check the classifieds and maybe put a post in "parts wanted" section. HTH!

Thanks for the info bigal55. I got quite a bit of it done over the weekend. Hopefully, i can get the rest done soon. I only have to finish the wires to the compressor, test it and then fill it up. Fortunately it is already a r13 system. I took pictures every step of the way so hopefully I can get those up when I finish so anyone else trying to start from scratch an easier time. Thanks again bigal55!

Glad you got it figured out. Those pictures and a short write up will surely help others who want to maintain their AC system. I'm sure there is a lot of confusion surrounding the various switches and the clutch wiring. Let's see those pics!

After that, I get to try to figure out the TCC lockuo on my 700r4. I'm really not looking forward to it. I got the Shift Technology vacuum switch but there are soooo many conflicting answers out there. I've been making some serious progress on my rebuild though.

Im going to subscribe. Im in the exact same boat with my 83 Camaro. Only difference is my compressor mounts to the drivers side, but wiring it up should be the same I would think. Right now I have all new components in a box in storage along with a complete wiring harness from an 86 Camaro. I was going to tackle it this summer some time, so I will be looking forward to your help!

Hey DonW. It shouldn't be a problem at all if you have an unbutchered harness. I'll be glad to help in any way I can though.
