3RD brake light...

ok i have yet to see a late 3rd gen camaro that actually has one that works... im guessin its a piece o crap part...

anyways.. even with new bulb... i cant get th bulb to light up... im leaning towards the fact that the bulb doesnt stay in there... and never feels as if its "locked" in...

anyone else realize theirs doesnt work and fix it?... i think that its jus the connection that is bad... which would explain y it doesnt click in and hold the bulb... im no electrician by any means.. but i understand the basics...

suggestions on how to fix it?

thanks fellas... and ladies.. althou i havent seen many of em..

Happy Holidays...

I don't know, burned out 3rd brake light bulbs are a pet peeve of mine... any burned out bulbs are... I mean come on, everyone can afford a bulb and should be able to install them.

Since you have a 91, I'm assuming thats the brake light you're working with. From the start you're further ahead than the 87-90 camaros with the 5 halogen bulbs that cost a minifortune each. The 91-92 cars have a single bulb thats available almost anywhere.

Now for the problem. You've got a trim cover, a reflector/bulb socket assembly, and a red lense. What I found was on my formula it was a simple unplug, plug in new bulb, reassemble. My other 91 Firebird was a pig. When GM assembled the reflector/bulb socket assembly they glued the brass contacts and wiring into the ABS socket. Well before the glue was dry some genious plugged in the bulb. So here I was 10 years later with a burned out bulb that was glued to the socket. When I pulled it out the reflector/socket assembly turned into about 4 seperate pieces. They each had to be seperated from the bulb, then I had to reglue the reflector/socket assembly, and then after everything was dry I installed the bulb and it worked fine.

So, what I'd suggest, check the bulb socket and make sure its not cracked. If it is, glue the cracks with epoxy or something similar and try it again. If it still doesnt work make sure the contacts are clean, then if the problem continues start checking wiring.

I commonly find the bulb is not making good contact with the socket. Very carefully bend the contact points on the bulb slightly outwards. Then push the bulb back in and try again.

You may also want to verify that you have voltage at the socket when the brake padal is depressed. The high mount brake light is on a separate circuit from the lower two brake lights, for redundancy, so part of your brake light switch may be defective.

my problem was the black coily cord was bad, I replaced the wire and that lasted 2 weeks and it stopped working again. Finally I just bought a new GM 3rd brake light assembly (over $100)!!! Works fine now!
