how to completely remove wiper or turn signa switch?

I have tried searching for quite a while to figure out how to completely remove the wiper or turn signal switch wiring from the column but all i can find (beyond removal of the wheel etc) is to tie mechanics wire to the harness at the base (once disconnected) and then pull it up through the column. My question is, how the heck do you do that when there is a giant plastic harness connector at the base of the column for the wiper or turn switch wiring. I cannot see it ever being pulled up through the column, there just isn't enough room. This is an 85 if that makes a difference.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks.

You have to twist the plastic length wise so it can pull up through the column. Put a little electrical tape on it to help keep it that way. Have replaced several, its easier than it looks. Still a bit of a pain tho.

There appears to be some kind of plastic tube that the wires travel down through to protect them but it is just barely larger than the wires, so i don't think there is anyway that the plastic harness will fit through. Does this wire protector come off? i was assuming it travels all the way up into the column.

thanks.

The tube is maybe 1ft & it has a slot, remove it prior to pulling the harness thru (& there is enough room). If you have a tilt adjust it straight.Keep the plug laying flat.Done it plenty times & even re-installed them w/out taking the column apart.
