So last week when i got in my 84 Z28 to drive to work my headlights started flickering, I replaced the switch today and same issue, and when the **** is turned the entire way to the left for the brightest instrument light setting the switch starts smoking. I was wondering where to start troubleshooting.

 

ok, found my issue. After tracking down wires I found somewhere in the cars life someone by-passed the high low dimmer switch so only the brights would stay on, also 2 of the headlights had bad lugs on it that broke off when trying to remove the connections. So with cleaned connections, 4 new head lights, wired in a new high low dimmer switch, the switch stays cool now and no issues! hope this can help someone in the future.
