88 stuck tachometer

My 88 tachometer needle sits around 4000 RPM running or not. If I tap on the dash it falls a bit. When running and you rev the engine it tries to move, I think the only thing wrong with it is it's stuck and not an electric issue but thats just a guess..Did the search thing for stuck tach and didn't come up with much. Is this an uncommon problem? Looking for insight on how to go about fixing. Thanks in advance!

Idk, but I'd probably just find another tach with the same face and needle, and swap it into your existing cluster. Old school clusters like the 82-89 Camaro version are such a pain. I've spent way too much time making the cluster in my 87 work right.

Check the integrity of the tach wire going to the distributor. Get someone to raise the RPM while you check the AC voltage change with a multimeter. The voltage should change with the RPM, if it doesn't the ignition module is probably the culprit. If it does change, try checking breaks in the wire. If all else fails replace the tach with one from the junkyard, those older gauges weren't known for their accuracy.

Same situation here. I ended up finding a N.O.S. tach a while back, cleaned the contacts where it plugs into with electronic contact cleaner. Works fine now. But, the temp gauge once in a while gets stuck when I turn the key, it goes up and wont come back down unless I give it a tap.

Re: 88 stuck tachometer

There is a guy on here who rebuilds them. Very reasonable prices. He did mine a few years back, and I have had no further issues with it. I think turnaround was under 2 weeks from when I sent it to him, to when I got it back:

They do that. The bulb test feature pegs the needle when you start the car, to let you know the idiot light is working. But you know, since it's a guage, it pegs... What I did was cut a couple pieces of 1/16" thick stainless wire about 1/4" long, then carefully super glued the stubs of wire to the two face rivets on the gage. A dab of cheap black paint with a small brush later, and they look like they belong there. When the bezel is in place, the new stops aren't visible at all. Now the temp gauge needle stops before it flings past the edge of the face and works 100% of the time.

Still gotta install the NOS Volt gauge I picked up to see if it will fix my retarded dancing volt gauge needle. Did a speedometer cable a few years ago, and an oil pressure sender...
