can i use a 1991 4 pin alternator in my 1986 trans am with a two pin connection ?
my current alternator is bad and needs to be swapped out.the car is a 1986 trans am and it currently has the 2 pin white connector style alternator.
i recently bought a 1991 LB9 305 as a spare engine and it has a brand new 4 pin style alternator with it.( tag reads: wilson 90-01-4631 12v 2945 54 )
i was wondering if i can use the newer alternator and what do i need to hook up/change.i dont want to just wing it and overload my charging system.
i have this b/n alternator and not much extra money so this is why im trying to swap them.any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
Re: can i use a 1991 4 pin alternator in my 1986 trans am with a two pin connection ?
i took it out to my car and eyeballed it,the mounting points look the same other than the connector position is rotated about 30-35 degrees inward or clockwise
looking from the front of the car at the alternator(it currently has the passenger side mounting)
the adapter you linked seems like it would work(possibly/hopefully)

so using these two examples, what wires from the two pin plug from the right diagram would i connect(and to what of the plis pins) to the four pins, sorry im not too electronically oriented and looking at both it is mildly confusing.

If you have a idiot light you need a resistor. https://www.jegs.com/InstallationIns.../764-30707.pdf
terminal 2 from the si is bat power or hook to the large lug on the alternator.
terminal 1 is a ignition switch power.
Re: can i use a 1991 4 pin alternator in my 1986 trans am with a two pin connection ?
i bought a pigtail ready to change it out,in the meantime i charged my battery for a day and a half.
i filed down the posts nice and clean as well as the terminals in the car, examined all the connections
and pulled the fuse for the amp(big *** wire that was there from a previous install)i hooked up the
battery and it fired right up.i just got back from a nice drive(in the rain F%$X...)and it started up fine so
that tells me the battery is good(also had it tested, results came back good)and the current alternator is
doing its job otherwise that 10-15 minute drive would've drained the battery fully.
so now i do have a plan if it happens again, thank you kindly for all your advice.
whoever had this car before went from side post connections to top post connections with a bolt?
its some mickey mouse macgiver nonsense that i will sort out in due time, thanks again sir....or madame
